The Colorado men’s golf team kept an impressive off-the-course record intact this past week.
Beginning Monday, the Buffaloes hope to make a few marks on the course as well.
During CU’s commencement ceremonies Thursday, all five of the Buffs’ seniors — Justin Biwer, Dylan McDermott, Jack Holland, Tucker Clark and Freddy Eisenbeis — received their degrees, keeping intact the program’s 100% graduate rate in 19 seasons under head coach Roy Edwards.
With the academic year complete, the Buffs will attempt to cap their athletic year with a strong showing at the Northwest/Washington regional, a three-round tournament that begins Monday on the Olympic Course at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
It will be the 24th regional appearance for CU, which is seeded sixth. The top five teams, in addition to the top individual not associated with those top five teams, advance to the NCAA final later this month in Carlsbad, Calif.
The Buffs plan to roll with a five-player lineup of McDermott, Biwer, Hunter Swanson, Ty Holbrook and Brandon Knight, with Holland serving as CU’s alternate. McDermott, Biwer, Swanson and Holland were part of the CU squad that advanced out of regional play into the NCAA finals two years ago.
“We’ve been in survival mode a little bit,” Edwards said. “Guys taking finals, some playing U.S. Open local qualifying last weekend, some guys played the Colorado four-ball, our five seniors went through commencement. It’s been fun, but the guys are ready to go.”
The Buffs are coming off a sixth-place finish at the ultra-competitive Big 12 championship, as a conference-record 11 programs received bids to the six NCAA regionals. CU finished just eight strokes out of third-place, with Biwer (T-14th) and McDermott (T-17th) posting top-20 marks.
“We were not displeased with that event at all,” Edwards said. “That tournament probably ends up being one of the top 20 amateur events in the world for the entire year. So we felt decent about that. I would say our entire season, playing a variety of golf courses and playing really well and finding different ways to play well, will definitely give our team confidence no matter where we play.”
With the core of the 2023 NCAA finals squad leading the way, the Buffs boast plenty of postseason experience. Biwer leads the Buffs with a 69.50 stroke average, but McDermott isn’t far behind at 69.65.
“(The course) is a really good, fair test. I’m excited about it,” Edwards said. “You’ve got to be really aware of where the ball is going into each green and making sure you’re taking the correct lines off tees. More than anything at the regional, just making sure you’re focusing on your game for 54 holes. That’s just a key thing to do. Just do the best you can for 54 holes, stay in your little bubble and see what shoots out at the end. That’s definitely the main focus.”
