A judge has ordered a mental competency examination for a convicted sex offender accused of following a San Rafael student to school.
Willie Jessie Clinton-Jones, 45, of San Rafael was arrested after an incident at Davidson Middle School on May 5. Police said he trailed the student onto the campus.
Clinton-Jones was charged with offenses related to child harassment. The school incident happened the day after Clinton-Jones was released from jail for a parole violation.
His public defender, James Berg, asked the judge to order an evaluation to see if Clinton-Jones is mentally competent to participate in his own defense for a trial. Judge Geoffrey Howard granted the request on Friday and set the next hearing for June 10.
Berg declined to comment after the hearing.
Clinton-Jones has a criminal history that includes 2020 convictions for indecent exposure and molesting or annoying a child. He is being held at the county jail without a bail amount.
San Rafael City Schools is pursuing a restraining order against Clinton-Jones, said Christina Perrino, the school district’s communications director.
