Karolina Espinosa made two free throws in the final 9.1 seconds, and Santa Cruz High’s girls basketball team edged host Aptos 58-56 in overtime in the teams’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League game Thursday.
Espinosa also knotted the score at 53-all and forced the extra stanza after making a field goal with 21 seconds left in regulation. She finished with six free throws and scored 12 points.
Santa Cruz’s Brooke Alden scored three of her seven points in overtime. Mila Conn scored a team-high 14 points for the Cardinals (8-9 overall, 3-1 SCCAL), the two-time defending league champion. Ania Sinnott scored 11 points and Brianna Fernandez chipped in with eight points.
Junior forward Abby Sherwood made four 3-pointers and scored 27 points for the Mariners (10-8, 2-2). She also had 12 rebounds and two steals. Senior forward Berkeley Ashby had 21 points, three rebounds, and two steals
On Saturday at 5:30 p.m., Santa Cruz hosts San Lorenzo Valley (9-8, 1-3), while Aptos hosts Harbor (1-12, 0-4).
Scotts Valley 60, at SLV 17 >> Junior guard Sammy Rebbert scored 13 points and the SCCAL leading Falcons rolled to victory Thursday.
Junior forward Amaya Guerra scored 11 points for the Falcons (14-2, 4-0), who led 35-6 at the half. Sophomore guard Hanna Shehorn, junior forward Isabella Williams, and senior center Claire Skinner each scored 10 points.
On Saturday at 2:30 p.m., Scotts Valley (14-2, 4-0) hosts Soquel (4-7, 2-2), and SLV plays at Santa Cruz (8-9, 3-1).
At Soquel 45, Harbor 12 >> Senior center Neely Pfeiffer scored a career-high 19 points, and the Knights rolled in their SCCAL game Thursday.
Ana Maurer scored 12 points for the Knights (4-7, 2-2), who play at Scotts Valley (14-2, 4-0) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Harbor (1-12, 0-4) plays at Aptos (10-8, 2-2) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Boys basketball
Scotts Valley 73, at SLV 38 >> Senior wing Taylor Knox made three 3s and scored a game-high 20 points, and the Falcons won their SCCAL roach game Thursday.
Junior forward Alex Burgos made two 3s and scored 15 points — all in the second half. Senior guard Will Shilling made four 3s and scored 13 points for the Falcons (8-10, 2-2), who led 32-18 at the half.
Senior center Jacob Sanders, a transfer from SLV, added 10 points against his former teammates.
Senior guard/forward Noah Steiger scored 17 points to lead the Cougars (4-12, 0-4). Braden Scoma made three 3s and scored 15 points.
On Saturday at 4 p.m., Scotts Valley hosts Soquel (9-9, 2-2), and SLV plays at Santa Cruz (9-9, 3-1).
At Soquel 78, Harbor 40 >> Junior Miles Johnson scored a game-high 15 points, and the Knights moved to .500 overall and in the SCCAL with their win Thursday.
Sophomore Chase Petersen scored 12 points for the Knights (9-9, 2-2), who led 27-12 after the first quarter and 43-23 at the half. Senior guard Nico Ramirez made three 3s and finished with nine points, and senior Nolen Westfall scored eight points.
Freshman guard Hudson Bare scored a team-high 11 points for the Pirates (6-11, 1-3). Sophomore guard Malik Wooden scored six points.
On Saturday, Harbor plays at Aptos (14-4, 4-0) at 1:30 p.m., and Soquel plays at Scotts Valley (8-10, 2-2) at 4 p.m.
At Monte Vista Christian 71, Seaside 29 >> Matteo Vidal scored 20 points, and the Mustangs galloped to victory in their Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division game Thursday.
Gavin Beckmen had 11 points, seven assists, and five rebounds for the Mustangs, who led 44-13 at the half. Jerry Arceo Jr. made three 3s and also scored 11 points.

Girls soccer
Aptos 5, at Santa Cruz 0 >> Emily Santiago and Alexa Castaneda each scored twice in the Mariners’ SCCAL win Thursday.
Scarlet Stateler also scored for the league leading Mariners (9-2-0, 4-0-0), and Gigi Zuniga had two assists.
The Mariners led 4-0 after 22 minutes. Castaneda scored the final goal of each half.
“The girls played better than the score suggests,” Cardinals coach Poul Schiebel said. “We had a few last minute roster changes due to injury and sickness, putting some players in positions they hadn’t played before. I’m very proud of how they all adjusted.”
Sophomore goalie Ari Flores made 13 saves for the Cardinals (4-6-1, 2-2-0), who play at SLV (2-7-0, 1-3-0) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Goalkeeper Evelyn Pini made three saves for the Mariners, who host Harbor (0-10-0, 0-4-0) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Soquel 3, at Harbor 1 >> Chloe Izenstark, Kaitlyn Gray, and Isela Gonzalez scored for the Knights in their SCCAL win Wednesday.
Arden Salles and Isis Tumanson had assists for Soquel (8-3-1, 3-1-0), which led 2-0 at the half.
“I’m proud of our team for bouncing back with a win after suffering a tough loss against Aptos,” Knights coach Jose Sierra said.
Becca Vaca scored for Harbor in the 44th minute. Pirates goalie Athen Forbus made four saves.
Sierra credited his defense, Chloe McGilvray, Haily Betterman, Ashlyn Brady, and Milana Flores for keeping Soquel in the game, and goalie Ophilia Lewis for her clutch saves in the second half.
On Tuesday at 7 p.m., Soquel will play its first home game in 18 days when it hosts Scotts Valley (5-4-3, 2-2-0), and Harbor plays at Aptos (9-2-0, 4-0-0).
At Scotts Valley 2, SLV 1 >> Sophomore forward Taylor Ericson had a goal and an assist in the Falcons’ SCCAL win Thursday.
Junior forward Ella Ireland also scored for the Falcons, and junior forward Izzy Morairty had an assist.
The Falcons, who took a total of 21 shots, led 2-0 at the half. SLV (2-7-0, 1-3-0) scored in the 63rd minute.
Scotts Valley’s starting goalie, Jazzy Phillips, has been out sick all week, which forced coach Taylor Raymond to pull up freshman Emma Stanton from the junior varsity squad. Stanton made three saves.
On Tuesday, SLV hosts Santa Cruz (4-6-1, 2-2-0) at 3:30 p.m. and Scotts Valley (5-4-3, 2-2-0) plays at Soquel (8-3-1, 3-1-0) at 7 p.m.
At St. Francis 2, Marina 1 >> Alyssandra Peterson and Peyton Orradre scored goals in the Sharks’ PCAL Santa Lucia Division win Thursday.
Faith Vokos had an assist for the Sharks (6-1-1, 4-0-0).
St. Francis goalie Madison Silva made three saves before she exited with a concussion sustained in a collision with Peterson and a Marina forward while trying to make a save in the 66th minute. Miriam Abonce replaced Silva and made one save.
St. Francis plays at Anzar (2-3-0, 2-1-0) in San Juan Bautista on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
