The Miami Dolphins are placing Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve after the quarterback was diagnosed with his third concussion in two years, a person familiar with the move told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet announced the move. Tagovailoa will be sidelined for at least four games with the designation.
He was hurt in the third quarter of a Thursday night game against the Buffalo Bills on a play where he collided with Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin. He ran for a first down and then initiated the contact by lowering his shoulder into Hamlin instead of sliding.
Players from both teams immediately motioned that Tagovailoa was hurt, and as he lay on the turf the quarterback exhibited some signs typically associated with a traumatic brain injury. He remained down on the field for a couple of minutes, got to his feet and walked to the sideline.
Tagovailoa this week began the process of consulting neurologists about his health. He was diagnosed with two concussions in 2022 and one while in college at Alabama
Chiefs sign Hunt
The Kansas City Chiefs are signing running back Kareem Hunt to their practice squad, a source confirmed to The Kansas City Star.
Hunt’s addition was first reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
The development comes as the Chiefs search for a replacement for starting running back Isiah Pacheco, who was injured in Sunday’s game and is expected to miss significant time.
Hunt, 29, played in 15 games for the Browns a year ago, rushing 135 times for 411 yards with nine touchdowns.
Given the two sides’ history, the Chiefs reuniting with Hunt is somewhat surprising.
KC drafted Hunt in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft, and he started every game over two productive seasons before video surfaced of an off-field incident where he shoved and kicked a woman.
Hunt later admitted that he was not honest with the Chiefs when they spoke to him about the incident. The Chiefs released him in late November of 2018, saying in a statement, “Kareem was not truthful in those discussions (with Chiefs management). The video released today confirms that fact. We are releasing Kareem immediately.”
