Previews, predictions for Saturday’s CIF Southern Section girls basketball championships for the San Gabriel Valley:
DIVISION 2AA
La Salle (28-3) vs. Hart (28-3) at Mira Costa HS, 4 p.m.
Outlook: The Lancers, who won the Division 3AA championship a year ago, are trying to become just the third non Open Division team since competitive equity divisions began in 2017 to win back-to-back sectional titles. It has been a remarkable season for the Lancers, who advanced with a defensive-minded 46-36 victory over Redondo, led by sophomore Kaden Cortes’ 12 points and freshman Casey Higgins’ 11 points and six rebounds. Still, junior Audrey Chen, who was named the Division 3AA player of the year as a sophomore, is their go-to scorer on most nights, averaging a team-best 14 points. The Lancers also have senior Reese Wong, who has led them in scoring on other nights, so the Lancers are a tough team to defend and figure out, as most opponents have learned under their young coach Scott Wiard. Hart has an identical 28-3 record and is just as talented and disciplined, which makes for a great final. And it’s a battle of the top seeds with La Salle No. 1 and Hart No. 2. Hart advanced with a 68-65 win over San Juan Hills, and has three players that average in double figures, paced by senior Laney Grider and sophomore Morgan Mack, who average 15 and 14 points, respectively. Overall, the Lancers have played a tougher schedule, have beaten better opponents and have a good chance to raise another trophy.
The pick: La Salle
DIVISION 3AA
Los Osos (24-4) vs. Flintridge Prep (28-2) at Colony HS, 8 p.m.
Outlook: The Wolves know their best chances of winning a sectional crown rests on the shoulders of Princeton-bound senior Ashley Chea, and she has been delivering in the playoffs. Chea scored a game-high 24 points to go with 11 rebounds in their 68-53 semifinals win over El Dorado. What has helped the Wolves’ playoff run has also been the contribution from freshman Maddie Smith, who scored 22 points in their semifinals win, giving the Wolves a legitimate one-two punch that they didn’t have in years past. This is Flintridge Prep’s first trip to the final since losing in 2018. They also lost in a 2007 trip to the final. “I’ve been doing this a long time,” Flintridge Prep coach Jayme Kiyomura-Chan said. “This is 27 years of coaching for me at the high school and collegiate level, and this is only my third time to the finals.” It’s another battle of top two seeds with Los Osos No. 1 and Flintridge Prep No. 2. Los Osos advanced with a 61-52 victory over Moreno Valley and only beat Louisville by four points in the quarterfinals. The Grizzlies have played a much tougher schedule overall, and are led by freshman Jackie Polk, who averages 14 points a game.
The pick: Los Osos
