Fall River Police shot and killed a man during an hours-long armed standoff.

Domonick Knight, 38, died following a standoff with police early Tuesday morning, according to a brief statement from the Bristol County District Attorney’s office.

Fall River Police were dispatched to 117 Langley St., at roughly 1:37 a.m. Tuesday for reports of an armed man inside that residence who was making statements of self-harm.

The police department says that a male relative reported the man “was experiencing a mental health crisis.”

Fall River Police wrote in its statement that “given the nature and urgency of the situation, medical personnel were requested to stage nearby.”

A trained crisis negotiator arrived at about 2:25 a.m. and attempted to negotiate with Knight through calls, text messages and a loud speaker.

After negotiations stalled, police were able to force entry to the residence at about 3:15 a.m.

“Movement was immediately observed at the top of the staircase, directly in front of the entryway. While (Emergency Services Unit) officers stood in the doorway, the male fired upon them from the top of the stairs,” the police wrote in the department statement. “Officers returned fire while repositioning away from the entryway.”

The firefight included police throwing a “flashbang distraction device.” At the end of the roughly three-minute exchange of gunfire, police found Knight at the top of the stairs suffering from a gunshot wound to his head.

Police say he had a short-barreled rifle with a drum magazine as well as a handgun.

Knight was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

“This is an ongoing and active investigation,” per the DA office statement. “An autopsy along with other forensic testing is pending. No further information can be disseminated at this time.”
