F1 leader Kimi Antonelli wins Italian GP

Kimi Antonelli took a big step to becoming the youngest champion in Formula 1 history with a fightback for the ages at his home grand prix on Sunday.

Antonelli stormed to victory at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, despite having started 19th on the grid. It took the Mercedes driver fewer than 17 laps to fight his way to the front.

The rest of the race was spent tussling with teammate and title rival George Russell for the lead. Antonelli passed him for the final time with three laps remaining, going on to become the first Italian to win at Monza in 60 years.

“Oh my God ... It feels like a dream,” Antonelli said on team radio after crossing the line.

‘Unbelievable, unbelievable’

“I did not expect it,” Antonelli said later. “Unbelievable, unbelievable. I am so happy, I could not have imagined to be here today but we managed to pull it off and I am really, really happy.”

It was the second furthest back anyone has come from to win a grand prix. John Watson won at Long Beach in 1983 despite starting 22nd.

Austin, Earthquakes play to 1-1 tie

Defender Guilherme Biro scored in second-half stoppage time as Austin FC played the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night.

Austin (6-10-7), which entered the match in 14th place in the Western Conference, is 3-3-2 in league play since the World Cup break.

San Jose (10-8-5) played to a draw for the second straight match following a four-game losing streak.

Brandon Vázquez headed a cross to the center of the box that Christian Ramírez touched forward for a left-footed finish by Biro from a difficult angle. It was Biro’s third goal of the season.

San Jose went ahead early with a left-footed strike to the bottom corner by Beau Leroux in the eighth minute. Moments later Austin thought it had a response, but the video assistant referee ruled the goal out for a handball.

Yamal scores 2, Barcelona wins 4th straight

Barcelona won its fourth game in a row at the start of the Spanish league and is the only team with a perfect record after four rounds.

Yamal scored a goal in each half following his first two goals of the season in the win against Rayo Vallecano in the previous round.

“I think we played a fantastic game,” Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said. “We controlled the game, we were dominant. This is what I want to see from the team.”

Man United stunned in added time at Everton

Ainsley Maitland-Niles struck in added time to rescue a 2-2 draw for Everton against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

The deadline day signing came off the bench to make his debut and curled a brilliant long-range shot into the top corner to salvage a point for his new club.

United twice led at Hill Dickinson Stadium through goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, who looked to have scored the winner in the 88th. But Everton had an answer on both occasions, with Tyrique George also scoring.

GB&I pulls stunning rally, wins Walker Cup

Connor Graham and Josh Hill each won the 18th hole in the final two matches Sunday at Lahinch as Great Britain & Ireland capped off a stunning comeback against the Americans to win the Walker Cup in County Claire, Ireeland for the first time since 2015.

Graham birdied the last two holes to earn a precious halve against 17-year-old Miles Russell. It came down to Hill, all square in his match with 18-year-old Tyler Watts, his Tennessee teammate. Hill hit a long bunker shot to 3 feet and holed the birdie putt for a 13 1/2-12 1/2 victory.

“We had that belief we could win, and it’s going to be a great night,” Hill said.

The Americans, loaded with seven of the top 10 players in the world amateur ranking, swept the morning foursomes matches in the fierce wind to build a three-point lead going into the 10 singles matches, long a U.S. strength. Team USA needed to win only 3 1/2 points in singles to keep the cup.

“The FIFA President announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr. Infantino will be standing for re-election,” a FIFA spokesperson said.

Infantino to stand for re-election

FIFA President Gianni Infantino will stand for re-election despite growing calls for him to step down from his position as the head of world soccer’s governing body.

Infantino has faced increasing pressure after his controversial plan to sell stakes in the World Cup was met with a furious backlash.

But FIFA said Sunday he plans to stand again in next year’s elections for a final term in office through 2031.

Lawrence wins a Swiss playoff over Casey

Thriston Lawrence of South Africa overcame a six-shot deficit Sunday with an 8-under 62 and denied Paul Casey his first victory in five years by making an 18-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to win the European Masters in Crans Montana, Switzerland.

Casey stood over a putt with the chance to win four times on the 18th green at Crans-sur-Sierre, three of them in the playoff. Lawrence made good on his first chance. He became the seventh three-time winner of this event, and the first since Seve Ballesteros.

Casey (68) led by one going to the 18th and got a huge break when his approach from rough hit a rock and bounced over a stream. But he couldn’t get up-and-down for par, leading to the playoff.
