King Soopers union workers set for a strike
Workers are expected to strike at King Soopers stores in Boulder, Broomfield and Louisville starting at 5 a.m. today as part of a general strike at 77 stores in the Denver metro area, according to a press release from the UFCW Local 7 union.
Union representatives said on Monday that grocery store workers would hold a two-week strike, starting today. About 10,000 workers are involved in the strike, according to the press release.
Non-impacted stores in and around Boulder County include those in Erie, Firestone and Longmont, according to a press release from King Soopers.
Impacted stores will run on temporary hours from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, according to the King Soopers press release.
NAACP to host Black History Month events
The Boulder County branch of the NAACP will host several community events for Black History Month throughout February.
Visual artist and professor Donna L. Woodley will host two free portrait oil painting workshops to celebrate educators. Supplies and refreshments will be provided. The first workshop will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Church Boulder, 5300 Baseline Road, in Boulder. The second workshop will be held at 9 a.m. Feb. 9 at Longmont High School, 1040 Sunset St., in Longmont. Completed works will be exhibited at the Lafayette Library, 775 W. Baseline Road, in Lafayette. An opening reception is set for 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 15 at the library.
The NAACP Freedom Fund Celebration will hold a free event featuring the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble at 3 p.m. Feb. 16 at Macky Auditorium, 1595 Pleasant St., at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Rotary offers youth leadership awards
The Boulder Rotary encourages high schoolers to apply for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, a local youth leadership conference this summer.
The six-day conference is for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors to learn more about leadership among their peers from Colorado, Wyoming and western Nebraska. The conference program includes problem-solving games, teambuilding activities, and group discussions. It will be held July 27 through Aug. 1 at YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park.

Two CU students receive local news scholarships
Two students in the University of Colorado Boulder’s College of Media and Communication program recently received scholarships that were affiliated with local news outlets, according to recently released university information.
The Lehman Communications Scholarship for 2024-25 went to Clare Henry, a journalism student. The scholarship is made possible by the Lehman family, the former owner and publisher of the Longmont Times-Call.
The Kevin Kaufman and Wendy Kale Scholarship for 2024-25 went to student Celia Vargas.
Kaufman previously worked as the executive editor of the Daily Camera and vice president for news operations at Prairie Mountain Media. Kale worked as a music critic and writer for the Colorado Daily.
The CMCI program awards more than 45 scholarships annually to its students.
