The longest-running all-star football game for seniors in the San Gabriel Valley will be played tonight at Montebello High.
The Southern California North vs. South All-Star Game, which was once dubbed the SGV Hall of Fame Game, is a decades-old contest that gives seniors a last shot at playing high school football before graduation.
Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and free for children under 7.
El Monte’s Hector Spathias is coaching the North squad and is one of the game’s organizers.
Spathias said he expects this to be his last season at El Monte and is thankful to be part of the game.
“It’s been a lot of work putting this together, but also a lot of fun,” Spathias said. “It’s always great to see the seniors enjoy another game on their way out. Looking forward to a great game and memorable night.”
The North team boasts San Dimas running back Caleb Morquecho, who ran for 1,011 yards and 13 touchdowns this past season. The Saints’ Tristan Fierro is also on the team.
Bishop Amat defensive tackle Jayden Murrieta should be a big help along with Charter Oak kicker Mitchell Gibbens.
Duarte’s all-purpose threat JaShion Lewis, who had 48 receptions for 971 yards and six touchdowns, is another headliner.
Spathias said Pasadena Poly quarterback Everson Mathis and Crescenta Valley QB Dominic Saris have been impressive during workouts.
Spathias also singled out South Pasadena offensive lineman DJ Ebner, who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 277 pounds. Baldwin Park lineman Juan Trujillo and Eric Hernandez also have stood out.
Wilson’s Charles Lewis will coach the South squad after leading the Wildcats to the CIF Southern Section Division 11 semifinals in 2024. They finished 11-2 and won the Montview League title.
Wilson running back Dominic Ezeone is on the South roster. Ezeone was a SGV All-Area first team selection after rushing for 2,206 yards and 31 touchdowns. West Covina running back Zander Requena gives the South another talented back. Requena rushed for 1,126 yards and 12 touchdowns.
The South also features a trio of strong quarterbacks with Schurr’s Joseph Alvarado, Pioneer’s Amiri Resendiz and South El Monte’s Matthew Medina.
El Rancho’s Andrew Guerrero, La Habra’s Charlie Moreland and Diamond Bar’s Colin Pearce lead the receivers group for the South.
