Inside Education Class 17 coming
The Santa Cruz County Office of Education has opened registration for Inside Education Class 17 for community members interested in learning more about countywide public education.
There is no cost to take part. The cohort meets eight mornings during the 2024-25 academic year and highlights the many initiatives underway to address the needs of students and staff in our 10 local school districts.

Cypress High holds information nights
Cypress High School will be holding two Prospective Family Information Nights on campus from 6-7:30 p.m. Feb. 29 and March 14. Interested families may attend either evening or watch the event live streamed on Instagram: @cypresshighschool_sc.
Cypress High is now enrolling ninth through 12th grade students for the fall of 2024. Cypress is a public high school located in Live Oak that serves students in an inclusive, kind and rigorous academic setting with small class sizes and a full college prep curriculum. Top Dog Film Festival set for Rio Theatre
The Top Dog Film Festival makes a stop at 7 p.m. March 23 at the Rio Theatre, 1205 Soquel Ave., Santa Cruz.
The event allows dog lovers from all walks of life to experience the enchantment and deep emotional connections shared between humans and their furry friends. This year’s lineup of films includes a diverse range of films that are sure to evoke a range of emotions from laughter to tears.
The event features a yappy hour to be held at 4 p.m. at Sante Adairius Midtown Portal, 1315 Water St., Santa Cruz. A portion of sales will benefit the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. For tickets and information, visit riotheatre.com. Tickets are $21 plus service fees.
Dogs are allowed on the outside patio at the portal. Dogs at not allowed at the theater.

Seminar examines ins, outs of Medicare
A registered Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program counselor will help demystify Medicare at a virtual seminar scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday via Zoom.
Topics include: The A, B, Cs (and D) of Medicare, original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage, when and how to enroll, choosing a drug plan and supplementing Medicare.
Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program counselors are highly trained and registered with the California Department of Aging. HICAP is not associated with insurance companies, products or agents. HICAP of Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties is a program within Senior Network Services, a community-based nonprofit organization.

Omega Nu accepts scholarship applications
Omega Nu, the Santa Cruz County women’s service organization, is now accepting scholarship applications. College scholarships are awarded to local high school seniors planning to attend a California Community College, UC, or Cal State School, or Cabrillo students transferring to a UC or Cal State schools.
Trade school scholarships are awarded to local high school seniors planning to attend a full-time vocational school.

Curtain to rise on ‘Beauty and the Beast’
The San Lorenzo Valley High School Theatre Department presents Disney’s Beauty and the Beast from March 1-10 at the San Lorenzo Valley Performing Arts Center, 7105 Highway 9, Felton.
Performances are scheduled at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays and a special Community Night performance at 7 p.m. March 7.

Kiwanis Club hosts crab fest on March 9
The Kiwanis Club of Surf City-Santa Cruz will be holding its annual crab fest fundraiser from 5:30-7:30 p.m. March 9 at the Santa Cruz Elks Lodge, 150 Jewel St., Santa Cruz.
This year’s event will be the club’s 43rd year for its crab fest and the feed is returning to its sit-down dining format.
The club is pre-selling a maximum of 250 crab dinner tickets through an Eventbrite link at the club’s website surfcitykiwanis.com per person, or $20 per person for pasta only dinners. The Elks Lodge will also be offering a full-service cash bar during our event.
As part of the fundraiser, the club will once again have raffle prizes and a silent auction and we hope the community can join us for a fun evening for a great cause — local youth services, accessible parks and college scholarships.
