‘Emotional’ win for Brit golfer Brown
English golfer Daniel Brown was in tears after going through an “outer-body experience” in winning the BMW International Open by two strokes on Sunday, days after the death of a close friend. The No. 170-ranked Brown shot a bogey-free 6-under 66 in the final round to capture his second European tour title, after the ISPS Handa World Invitational in 2023. After making his sixth and final birdie of the day at the par-5 18th, Brown walked off the green and started to cry. “I lost a friend at home last weekend,” Brown said, before pausing and holding back more tears. “It’s for him.” Brown said that was his motivation to win at Golfclub München Eichenried in Munich. “The last two days I kept thinking about him,” he said. “I tried not to get too emotional in the process. I’m not really too sure what happened today. All day really was like an outer-body experience. He was there with me, and it made it a little bit easier.” Brown, 30, started the day with a one-shot lead over countryman Jordan Smith, birdied four of his first six holes, and picked up two more birdies to finish on 22-under par for the week.
Shelton helps sister get time off work
Ben Shelton launched a public plea for his sister to get some extra time off from her job at investment bank Morgan Stanley so she could remain at Wimbledon to cheer for him. It worked. After advancing to face Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the fourth round, the 22-year-old American spoke Saturday in an on-court interview in front of a crowd that included his sister, Emma. “I’ve been playing well this week. It’s not just been me here. I have a great team. My parents are here. My girlfriend’s here. Also, my sister’s here. She’s been here for every match that I’ve played this tournament so far. She’s been the lucky charm,” the 10th-seeded Shelton, above, said. “But she has work back in the U.S., starting on Monday. She works for Morgan Stanley. If any of you all have some (connections) and get her a couple extra days off so she can (stay), that’d be great.” Sure enough, hours later, Emma posted a short video on Instagram in which Ben is heard asking her, “You got the week off or what?” She jumps up and down with her arms raised and a wide smile, and Ben says, “Shoutout, Morgan Stanley.”
Ohtani throws two scoreless innings
Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani worked two scoreless innings against the Astros on Saturday night in his fourth mound start of the season, striking out the side in order in the second while pitching on his 31st birthday. Ohtani allowed one hit and threw 31 pitches, 21 for strikes. He fanned Christian Walker, Victor Caratini and Yanier Diaz — all swinging — to conclude his latest outing as an opener as he works his way back from elbow surgery. In his previous mound start a week earlier, Ohtani threw the fastest pitch of his career at 101.7 mph. This time, he hit triple digits only once — a 100.9 mph fastball that Caratini fouled off. “Very impressed,” Dave Roberts said of Ohtani’s pitching. “His stuff continues to get better, the command, the feel. It’s nice to see he doesn’t have to throw as hard as he can. It’s more of a controlled fastball, controlled stuff. ... Looking at the next one we’ll have a discussion and how much and what we expect of him. Really impressed how he’s continued to get better each time out.” Ohtani has allowed one run in six innings this season for a 1.50 ERA. —AP
