OAKLAND >> Firefighters found a woman dead Monday morning following a two-alarm fire at a warehouse, officials said.

The blaze originally was thought to have burned more than one warehouse, but crews found that it only had affected one, and they prevented the blaze from spreading to other nearby buildings, Oakland Fire spokesperson Michael Hunt said.

Firefighters found the body inside the building during their overhaul operations, Hunt said. An Alameda County Coroner’s source said the victim was a woman.

The fire was one of two fatal ones in Alameda County on Monday. The other one — a house fire in Berkeley — killed one person and hospitalized three others.

The warehouse originally was thought to be vacant when crews were called to 10000 block of Russet Street, near 109th Avenue, about 5:45 a.m., officials said. The first engine arrived within four minutes of the initial call.

Fire crews requested a second alarm at 6 a.m. to protect the other buildings, Hunt said. Crews controlled the fire by 6:45 a.m.

Investigators remained at the scene past 9:30 a.m. to try to pinpoint how and where the blaze began.
