A 20-year-old man walking on railroad tracks died when he was struck by a train Thursday morning near 91st Street and 76th Avenue, Bridgeview police said.

The unidentified man was headed north on the Indiana Harbor Belt tracks around 8:30 a.m. when a northbound freight train approached him from behind Thursday morning, police said. The conductor told police the train crew spotted the man and immediately applied the brakes and blew the train horn to alert him. The man, however, didn't respond and was hit by the train, officials said.

Police said there is no intersection at that point of the tracks, which are in a prairie area adjacent to the I-294 Tollway — about three blocks west of Harlem Avenue. The IHB train passes through several southwest suburbs and is a nonpassenger, cargo freight train.

Police were withholding the man's name pending notification of next of kin.
