Resident of Soquel
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Joseph “Joe” Robert Alvarez, Jr., who left us peacefully on August 15, 2024, at the age of 85. Born on May 25, 1939, in Los Angeles County, Joe lived a life filled with love, service, and passion.
At the age of 17, Joe enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving his country with honor and pride. His time in the Marines shaped him into a man of discipline, loyalty, and resilience—traits he carried throughout his life.
Joe spent over 35 years as a dedicated produce buyer, a career that he excelled in with commitment and expertise.
He retired in 2000, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and professionalism that was admired by all who worked with him.
For the past 30 years, Joe made his home in Soquel, where he was a cherished member of the community. An avid runner, Joe was often found in his "office," on the trails of Nisene Marks, embracing the freedom and joy that running brought him. He was also a die-hard San Francisco Giants fan, never missing a chance to cheer on his team with unwavering enthusiasm.
Joe was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Robert III, his parents, Joseph Robert Alvarez and Josephine Alvarez (Fierro), his brother, Carl, and his beloved wife of almost 40 years, Karen “Kay. ”He is survived by his brother, Gilbert, his four children, Stacie, Robert, Ana, and Leslie, and nine grandchildren: Tyler, Wesley & Sydney Pinkston, Alyssa & Lauren Alvarez, Alex & Natalie Felix, and Joseph “Joey” & Kaylee Alvarez-Shryock, who were the light of his life. Joe shared with them his wisdom, kindness, and a deep love that will forever resonate in their hearts.
Joe will be remembered for his strength, his generous spirit, and the lasting impact he had on those who knew him. Though he is deeply missed, his legacy of love, resilience, and passion will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Rest in peace, Joe. Your love for family, the Giants, and the open road will forever be remembered.
