This portion of the project — which covers 109th Avenue east of Interstate 65 from Mississippi Street just before Iowa Street — was scheduled to be completed by Labor Day, but “if things go well” in the next few days the road will open this week, Uran said.
“That roadway could be completely open by the end of business tomorrow, if not Friday. So, way ahead of schedule,” Uran said during Wednesday’s Board of Public Works and Safety meeting.
Work on the 109th Avenue project includes roadway widening, new curbs, new lighting, new sidewalk and a roundabout at Mississippi Street. The project will take about 18 months, Uran had said in March.
During the bidding process, companies provided base bids and alternative bids to complete the project by Labor Day, Uran said.
“We knew how important it was to open that road back up,” Uran said of the bidding process.
Building the Iowa Street and 109th Avenue roundabout, the next phase of the project, won’t start until 2021, Uran said.
The roundabout project is projected to cost about $2.5 million, and the city received a $2 million federal grant for it, Uran said.
The federal funds aren’t available until 2021, Uran said, so that’s why construction won’t start until next year.
With the federal grant, the city will only have to pay about $500,000, Uran said.
Not taking the grant money “would be irresponsible on our part … and put the burden on our taxpayers,” he said.
The board approved $36,456 for landscaping and $225 per water application, with up to 12 purchased, near Mississippi Street and 109th Avenue.
