The new coaching regimes at Monarch and Centaurus finished Week Zero in victorious fashion.

In the debuts for the Warriors’ Aaron Carlson and the Coyotes’ Jeff Santee, each of them went on the road to get their first win with their new program. Centaurus beat Denver North, and Monarch beat Poudre.

It highlighted a perfect 3-0 opening week for local teams after defending Class 4A champ Erie kicked off its inaugural season in 5A with a lopsided win at Brighton.

Friday night

Centaurus 31, Denver North 7: Gage Mutz and Travis Meine each caught two touchdowns as the Warriors (1-0) beat the Vikings at All City Stadium.

Mutz caught TD passes from Tysen Burton, then Nick Parana to push Centaurus’ lead to 14-0 in the first half. Meine grabbed the next two after halftime, both from Halas Wise — the best coming off a short pass that Meine juked a defender before taking it for a 65-yard score.

The Warriors host Boulder next Friday at Spangenberg Field.

Monarch 29, Poudre 14: The Coyotes snapped a four-game losing streak to the Impalas, avenging their 27-7 loss to them from a year ago.

Monarch will remain on the road for its next three games — at Longmont (next Thursday), at Broomfield (Sept. 6) and at Centaurus (Sept. 13).

Erie 45, Brighton 0: Ronin Ward shined in his debut as the Tigers’ starting quarterback, throwing for 144 yards and a score.

Donovan O’Brien added two TDs of his own as Erie won its 14th straight game dating back to last year, when it lost its season opener in Florida before winning 13 straight to claim the 4A crown.

The Tigers, who moved up to 5A this season, are at No. 8 Ralston Valley next Friday.
