The Green Bay Packers have suspended wide receiver Romeo Doubs from Sunday’s game with the Los Angeles Rams for what they described as conduct detrimental to the team.

Doubs hadn’t practiced Thursday or Friday. The Packers (2-2) said at the time he was dealing with a personal matter.

“His decisions and actions during the week negatively impacted the team and required us to take this action,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said Saturday in a statement. “While we are certainly disappointed, we are confident that we will be able to move forward in a positive manner. Romeo is a valuable member of our team and we look forward to welcoming him back next week.”

Doubs has 12 catches for 169 yards and no touchdowns through Green Bay’s first four games this season after he had 59 receptions for 674 yards and eight touchdowns last year. He capped his 2023 season by catching a combined 10 passes for 234 yards and one touchdown in the Packers’ two playoff games.

He has spent his entire three-year career with the Packers, who selected him out of Nevada in the fourth round of the 2022 draft.

In other moves Saturday, the Packers signed cornerback Robert Rochell from their practice squad to the active roster and elevated fullback Andrew Beck from the active roster for Sunday’s game at Los Angeles.

Rochell has played in 39 career regular-season games with the Rams (2021-22) and Packers (2023-24).

Dodgers’ Kershaw out for rest of season

Clayton Kershaw, sidelined since late August with a toe injury, won’t pitch again this season for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“This is it for Clayton for 2024,” manager Dave Roberts said Saturday before Game 1 of the National League Division Series between the Dodgers and San Diego Padres.

A 36-year-old left-hander, Kershaw is a three-time Cy Young Award winner and 10-time All-Star. He didn’t pitch until July 25 after having offseason shoulder surgery. He went on the injured list Aug. 31 with a bone spur in his left big toe.

“Clayton has done everything he can to keep this thing moving forward and giving himself a chance to participate in the postseason,” Roberts said. “But where he’s at right now, physically, the foot, the toe just is not cooperating. It’s actually getting worse.”

Kershaw had been left off the Dodgers’ NLDS roster earlier Saturday before Roberts confirmed that his season was over.

Ohtani starts playoffs with towering homer

Shohei Ohtani hit a game-tying, three-run homer with two outs in the second inning of his highly anticipated playoff debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night.

After flying out in the first, the Japanese superstar sent a 2-1 pitch from Dylan Cease into right field, a 372-foot shot that had the crowd on its feet.

The Padres had taken a 3-0 lead in the first off Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Ohtani’s countryman who is also making his postseason debut in the National League Division Series.

Ohtani, who hit .310 in the regular season, scored Will Smith, who walked, and Gavin Lux, who singled, to make it 3-3.

Mitchell takes lead in Sanderson Farms

Keith Mitchell finished with a pair of birdies Saturday for a 7-under 65 and avoided some of the blunders that tripped up other contenders, giving him a one-shot lead going into the final round of the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Miss.

At stake for Mitchell, whose lone PGA Tour victory was more than five years ago, is a chance to earn a spot in four premium events on the PGA Tour next year.

He holed a birdie putt from just inside 40 feet on the 17th hole, then finished by correctly judging his lie in the rough with an approach to 6 feet for his last birdie. Mitchell, who was at 20-under 196, had a one-shot lead over Beau Hossler.

“The putt on 17 was just a huge bonus,” Mitchell said. “Then I got an accident lie on 18 and hit a great shot. All in all, it started kind of slow and the last 10 holes I was just able to capitalize a little bit more.

Eight other players were within five of the lead.
