The Dukes-to-Bruins trend continues to roll into Westwood as new Bruins coach Bob Chesney added another of his former players to UCLA’s transfer class Friday.

James Madison offensive lineman Carter Sweazie, a 6-foot-2, 327-pound left guard who started every game for Chesney at the position in 2025, announced his commitment to UCLA on Instagram on Friday morning. Additionally, Rutgers defensive lineman transfer Darold DeNgohe – who played for Chesney at James Madison in 2024 – announced his commitment to UCLA on Instagram on Friday afternoon.

Playing under his position coach – the Bruins’ newly hired offensive line coach and running game coordinator Chris Smith – Sweazie earned third-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors.

DeNgohe played in four games at Rutgers in 2025 after recording 28 tackles, six tackles for loss and a sack for JMU in 12 games in 2024. Defensive ends coach Sam Daniels served as defensive line coach for DeNgohe during his season on Chesney’s coaching staff with the Dukes.

“I chose to go to UCLA because of family. The coaches and staff want the best for me and my new teammates,” DeNgohe told the Southern California News Group. “I’m beyond excited to play for those guys. Love Coach Chesney and his staff. Excited to play for them and shock the world.”

UCLA has 10 former James Madison players as a part of its current transfer class, which was at 24 players as of Friday night. Along with Sweazie, other Dukes offensive linemen Riley Robell and JD Rayner have also committed, bringing UCLA’s overall offensive lineman haul to five.

MORE NEW ADDITIONS

Later Friday afternoon and evening, Utah defensive back transfer Tao Johnson and Cal Poly quarterback Ty Dieffenbach announced their respective commitments to UCLA. The program also added Boston College tight end Stevie Amar Jr. and Texas Tech defensive lineman Amier Washington as transfer commits, according to multiple reports.

During his junior season with the Utes, Idaho Falls native Johnson had 51 tackles and two interceptions.

Dieffenbach, an Agoura High alumnus, spent two years at Pittsburgh before transferring to Cal Poly, where he started in 2025. The former three-star recruit passed for 1,305 yards and nine TDs for the Mustangs in 2025.

He has two years of eligibility remaining and will likely compete with the younger brother of starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava, Madden Iamaleava, for backup snaps.

Amar, a former Oaks Christian standout, projects to be a developmental addition to the transfer class after playing in three games and maintaining his redshirt during his freshman season.

Washington played sporadically through the Red Raiders’ 12 games in 2025 after starting at outside linebacker three times during the 2024 season. The former three-star recruit tallied 21 tackles, six tackles for loss, and 2½ sacks across three seasons in Lubbock.

GILMER TO NEBRASKA

UCLA’s leading receiver from a season ago, sophomore Kwazi Gilmer, announced his commitment to Big Ten foe Nebraska. The Sierra Canyon alum becomes the second Bruin transfer – joining edge rusher Anthony Jones – in two days to join the Huskers.

Gilmer had 50 catches for 525 yards and four touchdowns in 2025, both leading UCLA’s receiving corps.
