Are we having fun yet?
Softball season is starting to hit its final stretch, as some teams will begin their early district play as soon as this week.
As always, we’re counting the top 10 teams in Macomb County so far this season — and for the first time, the team in the top spot doesn’t reside in Macomb and wear green and blue. There’s also a Blue Water Area Conference team later down the list that is riding a hot streak, bumping themselves up three spots.
Only teams within the borders of Macomb County are eligible for this list, so teams like Marysville, St. Clair and Port Huron Northern, while having great seasons, won’t be included.
Without further ado:
1. Anchor Bay Tars (27-8, up one)
Though some losses have scattered in, Anchor Bay’s list of victories is about as impressive as anybody’s. Since our last rankings, they’ve gone 9-2, beating Dakota, Chippewa Valley, Armada and Battle Creek Lakeview, among others. They’ve gotten it done with a deep lineup that’s highlighted almost exclusively by star juniors.2. Dakota Cougars (19-8, down one)
The Cougars certainly haven’t been bad, but an 8-6 record in their last two weeks of play is certainly a “down” stretch for the program. This was exacerbated by a four-game losing streak from May 8 to May 12, which included losses to Anchor Bay, Gaylord (twice) and a streaking Ford Falcons squad.
The offense has been there, but they’ve had trouble holding opposing offenses down with opposing run totals of 13, 17, 9, 9 and 16 leading to losses.
3. Richmond Blue Devils (22-5, up one)
Richmond head coach Howard Stuart wanted to see how his players would respond after losing three-straight games against Anchor Bay and Dakota. That was on April 21, and they’ve only lost once since, going 17-1 in that span.
Since our last rankings, they’ve won nine in a row, beating Almont, Traverse City and TC Central, Kingsley, North Branch and Cass City. They also have the advantage of hosting upcoming districts.
4. Lutheran North Mustangs (17-5, down one)
While the Mustangs have lost four times in the last two weeks, if we take a closer look, we see that all four are against Mercy and Divine Child — the former is No. 1 in Division 1 and the latter is No. 4 in Division 2. They also picked up a win over Divine Child in that span, along with wins over Athens, Bishop Foley, Dearborn, Royal Oak and Grosse Pointe South.
5. Ford Falcons (20-9-1, no change)
An 8-1 stretch is certainly enough to keep the Falcons firmly planted in the top five of the county — and the only loss during that time was when they split a MAC Red series with Dakota, meaning they also earned a win over one of the top teams.
The Falcons offense is starting to hit its stride, scoring 9, 10, 12, 13 and 10 in a few of their wins. Part of that has been the power swing of Grace Polega, who is up to nine homers this year, to help tie the Ford school record for most dingers by the team with 22.
6. Romeo Bulldogs (19-8, no change)
Stop me if you’ve heard this before: it’s another MAC Red team that has been scalding hot in recent weeks.
The Bulldogs have won eight of their last nine, the one loss being against Dakota. That also includes beating Anchor Bay, the new No. 1 team, in a game where Sarah Jesperson went 4-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs and a home run. They also handed Port Huron Northern one of its two losses.
7. Armada Tigers (19-11, up three)
Don’t let the Tigers get hot? Armada entered the month 11-8 and has since done a whole lot of winning, earning victories over rival Yale along with MAC Red competitors Eisenhower and Chippewa Valley, along with losses to Romeo and Anchor Bay. That level of competition is going to be beneficial, too, as they’ll need to beat Lutheran North to advance in districts.
8. Fraser Ramblers (14-8, down one)
Fraser has been something of a foil to some of the other teams on this list; After starting 6-0, they’re just 8-8 since and haven’t mounted a streak of more than three wins or losses at any time.
And it’s not that they’re bad, because bad teams don’t beat Marysville. With districts coming up, they’ll need to rediscover that consistent winning formula.
9. Warren Mott Marauders (21-10, down one)
The Marauders had a rough weekend, going 0-4 — and the closest one, a 2-1 loss to Eaton Rapids, was with Sharon Becroft pitching. And when Becroft is on the mound, the Marauders win — she’s got 11 wins this season, helping Mott get in position to play for a MAC Gold title this week against Clawson.
10. Regina Saddlelites (14-12, down one)
Regina has been a victim of a gauntlet schedule, with four losses combined between Orchard Lake St. Mary’s and Divine Child two weeks ago. That kind of gauntlet play has set them up for the postseason, where they’ll likely — ironically — have to go through the team right above them in the rankings, Mott, on May 31.
