Art and jazz just seem to go together, especially on a summer evening. Attend the VVAC gallery reception inside, which will showcase the fine art of local and well-known artists. Then head outside to the gazebo to hear live jazz selections. Bring a blanket or lawn chair.

As evening nears, Brookfield Zoo pulls out the stops with dining, a beer and wine garden, live music, roaming performers, kid entertainment and a new laser light show. And, of course, there is the wildlife. The band Hello Weekend performs Friday; House Party takes the stage Saturday. Among the exhibits open until 8:30 p.m. are Butterflies!, The Carousel, Clouded Leopard Rain Forest, Dolphin Underwater Viewing, The Fragile Desert and Hamill Family Wild Encounters.

The Midwest Wizard of Oz Festival began in 1982 in Chesterton, Ind. This year’s event will feature costumed characters, contests, crafts, a zip line, hayrides and a host of speakers.
