Troy police have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with the accidental shooting of a 9-year-old boy May 30.
Police arrested Zanious Terell Murphy on Thursday, June 5. He was arraigned Friday on a charge of violation of firearm safe storage, causing serious injury to a minor, at 52-4 District Court in Troy on Friday, June 6. Bond was set at $30,000, no 10%, according to a release from Troy police.
The boy remains in critical condition.
Murphy lived with the child but was not related to him, police said.
Michigan’s “safe storage” law went into effect last year. It requires owners to safely store their firearms when a minor is, or is likely to be, present. It is a felony if a child is injured or dies as a result of gaining access to a firearm; it’s a misdemeanor if a child gains access to a firearm and possesses it in a public place or possesses it in a careless, reckless, or threatening manner.
Officers responded to a home on Crooks Road at about 4:15 p.m. May 30 after receiving a request for an ambulance for an injured child.
First responders found the boy bleeding from the head. He was immediately transported to a hospital.
A firearm was recovered from the home, police said. The child’s mother was present at the time of the shooting.
