Several neighborhoods in Fraser were temporarily without water service Monday due to water main breaks caused by surging water pressure from the Great Lakes Water Authority, according to city officials.

The city said the breaks were on:

• Northwood Road, in the area of Masonic Boulevard and Kelly Road

• 14 Mile near Utica Road

• James Pompo Drive, which is west of Groesbeck Highway between 14 Mile and 15 Mile roads.

According to Fraser’s social media page, water was restored to the 14 Mile site later Monday afternoon while the remaining two areas would have the service restored by 7 p.m.

The Fraser Department of Public Works (DPW) said some residents would experience temporary water outages during the repairs. The DPW said it had personally notified impacted residents about the water shut-off.

Also, officials said disturbances in the water mains may temporarily cause minerals or sediments to appear in the water.

“This is not a cause for serious concern,” DPW officials said in their Facebook post. “The water remains safe to use. We advise residents that if they notice any brown or rusty water, they should run cold water in the bathtub or utility sink until the discoloration clears.”

Typically, the water should clear up within 10-15 minutes, officials said.

The Macomb Daily has reached out to the GLWA for further comment about the reason behind the water surges.

In February, the water authority approved a 5.9% increase in water system rates and a 4.5% increase in sewer rates, which were expected to be passed along to individual communities.
