The Los Angeles County Fire Department’s famed Urban Search and Rescue Team, known and admired internationally as USA-2, returned home late Monday night at the department’s facility in Pacoima, after a 14-day deployment to the massive earthquake disaster in Turkey.
USA-2 on Feb. 6 joined its Virginia-based counterpart, known as USA-1, in Turkey as part of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Disaster Assistance Response Team to assist in humanitarian and response efforts.
According to L.A. County Fire Department’s spokesperson Fire Capt. Sheila Kelliher, the team, melded from two regions of the U.S., included more than 200 people, including disaster experts, 164 search and rescue members and 12 canines.
Now the search-and-rescue team is back home in Los Angeles. But the disaster team, DART, is still on the ground in Turkey, where they led an effort to search for survivors in Adiyaman, a city of 300,000, by using sensitive cameras, listening devices, search-and-rescue canines and other specialized equipment.
News reports described the devastation in Adiyaman by noting that the city’s clock tower stopped at 4:17 a.m., when the first 7.8 quake struck on Feb. 6, followed by another huge quake just hours later.
The L.A. County Fire Department reported on Twitter that the teams helped save an earthquake victim almost five days after the quake: “Miraculous news from our @USAID disaster team in Adiyaman, #Türkiye. Last night, our crews assisted Turkish rescuers in providing medical care to a person freed from wreckage nearly 5 days after these deadly earthquakes. The individual is now at a medical facility.”
Kelliher said in a press release that the search-and-rescue members who returned Monday night, “are getting some well-deserved rest at home after completing their mission in Türkiye. Even though we’re home, our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the people affected by the earthquakes.”
Meanwhile, the DART team, “is still on the ground, working around the clock to deliver aid.” She added, “We are humbled by the resilience of the people of Türkiye. We remain hopeful for all those affected and pray for strength, recovery, and healing.”
