Boston College hands FSU 2nd loss

Bill O’Brien cautioned it was just one win. What a massive first win of 2024 it was for Boston College — and for the O’Brien Era. Treshaun Ward totaled 138 yards of offense, including a 13-yard TD reception, against his former team as Boston College stunned then-No. 10 Florida State 28-13 on Monday night in Tallahassee, Florida. Ward, a Tampa native who played at Florida State from 2019-22, had 77 yards rushing and 61 yards receiving as the Eagles (1-0, 1-0 ACC) totaled 263 yards rushing. It was a resounding debut for O’Brien, who was introduced in mid-February after Jeff Hafley’s departure to become the Packers’ defensive coordinator. “I’m very proud of these guys,” O’Brien, above, said. “They were resilient tonight. To come down here against a team that really in their minds had to have this win, that’s a heck of a statement for BC. But it’s just one win.” The defending ACC champion Seminoles, viewed as a contender for a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff, fell to 0-2 for the first time since 2021 and dropped out of the AP Top 25. “Sick to how this season started,” coach Mike Norvell said.

Nadal defends Sinner on doping issue

Rafael Nadal told a Spanish television show that he doesn’t think Italian Jannik Sinner intended to use a banned substance and that the No. 1-ranked man didn’t receive preferential treatment when he was cleared of doping after testing positive twice in March for trace amounts of an anabolic steroid. “I trust that he wasn’t punished because those who judged this case determined quite clearly that there was nothing to punish. ... I don’t believe the sentence has anything to do with him being No. 1 in the world,” 22-time major champ Nadal, above, said Monday in an interview with “El Hormiguero.” The 23-year-old Sinner beat Tommy Paul 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-1 in the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Monday night. The International Tennis Integrity Agency said on Aug. 20 that it was determined the banned performance-enhancer entered Sinner’s system unintentionally through a massage from his physiotherapist, and that is why the player wasn’t suspended. Nadal, who sat out the U.S. Open, said: “I believe in someone’s good faith. I know Sinner; I don’t believe that Sinner wanted to dope.”

Draisaitl gets 8-year, $112M extension

The Oilers signed Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year contract extension worth $112 million, a deal that gives the German star the highest salary cap hit in NHL history at $14 million. The new contract begins with the 2025-26 season and runs through 2033. New general manager Stan Bowman announced the extension Tuesday. “This is a historic day for the Edmonton Oilers,” Bowman said. “Leon’s commitment to our team, our city and Oilers fans everywhere cannot be overstated. His desire to help bring a Stanley Cup title home to Edmonton is central to everything he does both on and off the ice.” Draisaitl, 28, and Connor McDavid helped the team reach Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final last season. Draisaitl, the league’s MVP in 2020, was set to be an unrestricted free agent next summer. He surpasses Auston Matthews’ $13.25 million cap hit with this new contract. With Draisaitl’s deal done, the Oilers can turn their attention to re-signing McDavid, their captain, face of the franchise and reigning playoff MVP. He could be a free agent in the summer of 2026. —AP
