Matthew Baldino’s solo home run in the first inning powered San Marin High to a 5-2 victory over crosstown rival Novato in Friday’s MCAL baseball showdown.
Dylan Procopio added a two-run homer in the fifth inning, following his two-run double in the third inning for the Mustangs (3-5, 3-3). Griffin Vorhaus drove in both runs for Novato (5-2, 2-2). On the mound, Vorhaus scattered five strikeouts, four walks and five hits across five innings.
Senior Sebi Chick’s two-run double in the first inning lit a fire for San Rafael (5-5, 3-3) in Friday’s 6-0 victory over rival Terra Linda. Senior Floyd Greene was 3-for-4 with a double, and junior Noah Shapiro had a pair of hits with an RBI and a run. Bulldogs ace Colby Jackson struck out six batters in a three-hitter. Terra Linda’s Felix Doxon struck out seven batters and walked two in five innings of work, with three earned runs on seven hits.
Ethan Ferry’s solo home run sparked a three-run Redwood High rally as the Giants beat Archie Williams High, 9-4, on Friday. The Giants’ Jack Moseley added a two-run homer in the sixth inning. Theo Trono was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Rowan Borghuis was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for Redwood (6-1-1, 5-1). Josh Bluer homered for the Peregrine Falcons (2-9, 2-4) in the bottom of the second inning.
Prep softball
Arianna Mendoza had three hits and scored three runs to help guide San Marin High to a 10-2 non-league softball victory against Cardinal Newman on Thursday night.
Taylor Testa pitched all seven innings, scattering eight hits and striking out eight. San Marin (2-2) got triples from Alina Rempe, Testa, and Leah Cronin. Rempe had a team-high two RBIs.
Wren Wilcox had two hits and two RBIs to account for most of San Domenico’s offense in a 17-3 loss to St. Joseph Notre Dame on Friday. The Panthers (2-4) were limited to four hits and committed five errors. Wilcox also had the Panthers’ lone RBI on Thursday in a 6-1 loss to Head-Royce.
Morgan Carlson and Bella Ferrety both hit home runs to lead Marin Catholic to an 18-3 victory in five innings against Campolindo on Friday. Carlson had three hits, drove in five, and scored three times. Anna Held had a pair of hits and drove in three runs. Held also started inside the circle, allowing six hits and striking out four in five innings. MC (9-0-1) scored 14 times in the third inning to blow the game open.
San Rafael surrendered five runs in the third inning and four more in the sixth to end the game in a 13-3 road loss to Concord on Friday. Avery Prymak, Gabby Rodriguez, and Amy Serrano had run-scoring hits for the Bulldogs (7-2) who dropped their second game in a row.
College softball
Former Marin catholic standout Rose Malen made history as the first player in Chapman University history to be named the NCAA Division III Pitcher of the Week for March 9-15.
Malen tossed a no-hitter on March 9, walking the first two hitters then retiring the next 15 in a row. Malen flirted with a second no-hitter on Sunday, going into the seventh inning before allowing her only hit of the game, a solo home run.
All told, Malen has thrown 79.1 innings this season with an 0.97 earned-run average. Malen has allowed 54 hits and struck out 62 — including a season-high 10 in a victory against Oneonta on Friday.
Girls lacrosse
Undefeated Del Oro powered to an 8-4 victory over Marin Catholic in Kentfield on Friday in a matchup of top-25 teams. The Wildcats (4-3, 3-1) rallied briefly in the first half with two quick goals, then added back-to-back goals toward the end of the game. Marin Catholic is ranked 24th in the state, while Del Oro (8-0) is ranked eighth. The Wildcats are scheduled to play at Novato on Tuesday.
Boys volleyball
Bryce Nottingham had 13 kills and Jonathan Conley had 25 assists as San Marin rolled to a 25-9, 25-16, 25-15 victory against Terra Linda on Thursday. Paden Hou, Joe Yako, and Parker Davis combined to have 10 aces for the Mustangs (6-8, 2-4).
Boys tennis
Redwood High’s Lukas Berger nailed down a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win over San Marin’s Oliver Pool in a battle at No. 1 singles as the Giants swept the Mustangs 7-0 on Thursday. Milo Mancil and Carter Smith also had singles wins for the Giants.
Tam High earned a 6-1 victory over Marin Catholic on Thursday, with singles wins from Noah Gadd Olesen, Nate Schrauth and Bennett Young. The Wildcats’ Charlie Miller earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles over Nathan Bandouveres.
Mason Ogborne, Griffin Cooper, and Zander Alpert won at Nos. 1-3 singles, respectively, to lead Branson to a 6-1 win against Novato on Thursday. Miles Harris won at No. 4 singles for the Hornets.
Aces
Fred Bayles reported a hole-in-one Thursday afternoon on the 289-yard, par-4 fifth hole at Indian Valley Golf Club.
