Clean energy in state

Re “Green mandates are making life costly” (Aug. 25):

I remodeled with solar panels, low-flush toilets and tankless water heater a few decades ago to use and enjoy.

However, I also remember back in the 1970s when my parents’ new home had an electric stove that was not as efficient or helpful as gas and I see people with EVs making several stops to pick up kids from faraway schools and wondering if it will get them to and from work.

Knowing that climate change, as is said by a large number of weather scientists, is just another hoax by elitists wanting more of our money helps my need to tell others this is pathetic, as Susan Shelley has said.

I’m 75 and tired of leftist elitists getting away with destroying poor and middle-class lives such as mine with their schemes. Turn California and our country back around to helping citizens continue to create the greatest nation this world has ever seen.

At the former Travelodge here in Costa Mesa

An article in your paper on Aug. 22 reported that the city of Costa Mesa has received $29 million to transform an existing motel into 36 studio units and 40 1-bedroom units for the homeless.

The project was touted as creating a “safe, nurturing environment for those unable to find housing” and a similar nonsensical statement was made by OC Supervisor Katrina Foley. Simple math indicates that the cost per unit of these houses is $381,579.

Is that the best government can do with our money? When I look on Amazon I can find a premium tiny house for $26,000 and a four-bedroom mobile home for $45,000. Even if the manager’s fee and upkeep for a period are included in the $29 million, it seems that a much cheaper solution for the housing is available.

Maybe the nonprofit involved should be investigated for gouging taxpayers.

Californian Kamala Harris

Re “Stakes high for California in Trump-Harris race” (Aug. 23):

I would like to thank Tom Elias for reassuring us Californians that there would be no change to our state if Kamala wins the presidential election.

California is a lovely place and it would be a shame to make any changes that would encourage all the deserters to return.
