FELTON
Work hours expand on Newell Creek pipeline project
Extended work hours — 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. — have started for the Santa Cruz Water Department’s Newell Creek Pipeline Replacement Project on Graham Hill Road and will stay in effect through Aug. 6. The new schedule, approved by the county, lines up with summer break for San Lorenzo Valley schools.
The Santa Cruz Water Department says pipeline installation continues to progress steadily along Graham Hill Road, moving south toward Henry Cowell Drive. While pipe is installed two days a week, support work like trenching, grinding, backfilling and paving continues throughout the week — so visible progress may vary. Starting July 25, signal sensors at Lockewood will be temporarily disabled. The traffic light will operate on a fixed timer, which may cause longer waits for vehicles entering from Lockewood Lane.
The full project area spans from the intersection of Graham Hill Road and East Zayante Road in Felton to Henry Cowell Drive and is expected to take about two years to complete. The relocated Newell Creek Pipeline will increase system resilience, improve emergency preparedness and ensure the availability of reliable, safe drinking water.
The $29 million project is funded through fees collected from Santa Cruz Water Department customers, based on monthly water rates as well as the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund through an agreement with the State Water Resources Control Board.
