With small amounts of sleep and a big commitment to not give up on their dreams, two Broomfield brothers are debuting their first feature film this summer.

Dan and Patrick McClain spend their days working in the mortgage industry, but for years they’ve been working toward bigger dreams after hours.

“We’re slaving away on mortgages all day and then work on movies whenever we can find the time,” Dan McClain said. The brothers said they’ve been writing independently for years but decided to join forces about four years ago.

“The actual nuts and bolts of sitting down to write a script or work together, that’s after hours,” Patrick McClain said. “Whether that’s in the middle of the night or meeting early in the morning, it’s definitely a passion project.”

Their hard work and late-night meetings will pay off this summer with the release of their first feature film, “The Corner.”

The movie follows the owner of a Chicago bar and his relationship with the owner of the funeral home across the street. When one of the bar employees is found dead in the bar, the pair works together in unconventional ways to solve the case in what the brothers describe as a neo-noir mystery.

“I was walking to the bar where we shot the film in Chicago to meet a friend 15 years ago when the idea sparked,” Patrick McClain said. “The idea was this juxtaposition between a lively, vibrant bar owner with lots of friends and a happy, fun lifestyle against a funeral home owner who isn’t used to that lifestyle but wants to be a part of it.”

The brothers said through encouragement from their mutual friend and director of the film, Zachary Raderstorf, they all worked together to start the Octopi Group studio. The company has worked on half a dozen films, some of which are written by the brothers as The Brothers McClain.

“One of the things that we’re really proud of is using local talent for the film,” Dan McClain said. “As enticing as LA and Hollywood are, independent filmmakers can express ourselves in our own towns, and we’re looking forward to doing that here as well.”

“The Corner” will have a small theatrical release at the end of June in Illinois and should be available to stream on Amazon starting July 15, according to the brothers. More information about future screenings and future projects can be found on Instagram @TheOctopiGroup.
