DALLAS >> The father of Winnipeg Jets top center Mark Scheifele died unexpectedly overnight before Game 6 of their second-round playoff series against Dallas, the team said hours before Saturday night’s game.
Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said the organization was doing everything it can to support Scheifele. The rest of the players were told about Brad Scheifele’s death before the team’s optional morning skate.
“It’s a terrible loss,” said Jets captain Adam Lowry. “It’s tough to put into words how gutted we all feel for Mark and his family.”
There was no immediate word on the cause of Brad Schiefele’s death.
Clark’s triple-double leads Fever past Sky 93-58 as tempers flare after hard foul in 3rd quarter
INDIANAPOLIS >> Caitlin Clark opened the season with the third triple-double of her career, and the new-look Indiana Fever dominated the final 16 1/2 minutes Saturday to pull away from the revamped Chicago Sky 93-58.
Last season’s WNBA Rookie of the Year finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists while blocking a career-high four shots. Aliyah Boston added 19 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks, while Natasha Howard scored 15 points in her Fever debut.
DeWanna Bonner also scored seven points to move into third on the WNBA’s career scoring last, passing Tina Thompson. Bonner now has 7,489 points.
Angel Reese had 12 points and 17 rebounds for the Sky, who lost three of four last season to Indiana. Ariel Atkins added 11 points.
But the game was defined by the newest chapter in the Clark-Reese rivalry. This time, it came on a hard foul from Clark across Reese’s arm, which jarred the ball loose and knocked Reese to the floor with 4:38 left in the third quarter. When Reese jumped up to confront Clark, Fever center Aliyah Boston stepped between the two players as Clark walked away from the skirmish.
The referees upgraded Clark’s foul to a flagrant 1 and assessed technical fouls to Reese and Boston following a replay review.
Antonio Brown detained after gunshots outside Adin Ross’ boxing event
MIAMI >> Antonio Brown was briefly detained by police early Saturday following an altercation in which gunshots were fired outside a celebrity boxing event in Miami, according to the former NFL star and video posted to social media.
Miami police confirmed in a written statement that officers responded to the area at about 3 a.m. after receiving an alert from the gunshot-detection system ShotSpotter. Officer Kiara Delva, a department spokeswoman, said police questioned several people but made no arrests. No injuries were reported at the scene.
The investigation continues, Delva said, and she could not confirm the names of anyone involved.
Video posted to social media showed Brown involved in a fight with several people at the boxing event, which was hosted by popular streamer Adin Ross. He was seen apparently holding a black pistol as he pursued someone. Shots could be heard off camera shortly thereafter.
Additional video showed Brown, hands behind his back, being escorted from the venue by an officer.
