Rhys Hoskins homered for the Milwaukee Brewers in his return to Citizens Bank Park, but David Dahl went deep in his Philadelphia debut to back Zack Wheeler and the Phillies in a 3-1 victory Monday night.
In the opener of a three-game series between NL division leaders, Edmundo Sosa and Johan Rojas hit consecutive RBI singles in the bottom of the second inning.
Wheeler (7-3) pitched seven strong innings, allowing five hits and three walks with six strikeouts.
The only run Wheeler gave up was the homer by Hoskins, who spent the first seven years of his career with the Phillies. He was sidelined throughout his final season with the team last year while recovering from a knee injury.
In an emotional return, the popular Hoskins was greeted with a standing ovation from the sellout crowd as well as his former Phillies teammates and coaches. He tipped his cap in acknowledgment.
In the seventh, he hit a fastball from Wheeler over the left-field wall for his 10th homer of the season.
Dahl arrived at the ballpark a couple of hours before the first pitch for his first major league game since April 4, 2023, with San Diego. The veteran outfielder was promoted from the minors to replace Brandon Marsh, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.
In the fourth, Dahl lined a full-count fastball from Bryse Wilson into the right-field seats for a solo shot that made it 3-1.
Dahl, who singled in his first at-bat, made the NL All-Star team in 2019 with the Rockies, but his career has been derailed by injuries.
DIAMONDBACKS 4, GIANTS 2 >> Pinch-hitter Pavin Smith belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to lift Arizona over San Francisco.
Jake McCarthy got the rally started with a one-out double. Then Smith smashed a pitch from Randy Rodríguez that barely cleared the yellow line above the wall in center.
The D-backs have won three straight while the Giants have dropped a season-high five in a row.
ORIOLES 7, BLUE JAYS 2 >> Austin Hays hit two homers and Grayson Rodriguez (6-2) pitched two-run ball into the seventh inning, helping Baltimore win at Toronto.
Anthony Santander and Ramón Urías also went deep as the Orioles won for the ninth time in 11 games.
Rodriguez allowed one earned run and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.
REDS 13, ROCKIES 3 >> Will Benson drove in three runs, Jeimer Candelario and Tyler Stephenson each hit a two-run home run, and visiting Cincinnati blew past Colorado.
The 13 runs were a season high for the Reds, who have won seven of their past 10 games after starting the season 20-30.
Cincinnati racked up 18 hits, with each of the nine players in its starting lineup getting at least one hit.
ASTROS 7, CARDINALS 4 >> Alex Bregman and Yainer Diaz homered in the eighth inning, helping host Houston rally past St. Louis.
Bregman tied it at 4 when he hit a leadoff drive to left off JoJo Romero (2-1). It was Bregman’s fifth homer in his last seven games.
With two outs and Jake Meyers aboard, Diaz homered off the wall in left. Chas McCormick then reached on an error and stole second ahead of Jose Altuve’s RBI double.
Yordan Alvarez hit a two-run homer, helping the Astros to the win after Kyle Tucker departed in the third inning after fouling a ball off his right shin.
Nolan Gorman homered twice for the Cardinals.
METS 8, NATIONALS 7 >> Jose Iglesias had three hits, including a go-ahead single in the fifth inning, and Mark Vientos homered as visiting New York held off Washington.
The Mets’ beleaguered bullpen nearly coughed up another late lead. The Nationals scored two runs in the ninth charged to Adam Ottavino, but Jake Diekman threw a called third strike past Drew Millas with runners at the corners for his second save.
TIGERS 2, RANGERS 1 >> Jake Rogers homered twice, including a tiebreaking drive in the eighth inning, and Detroit defeated host Texas.
Rogers hit a two-out homer in the third inning against Nathan Eovaldi and a 1-1 cut fastball from José Leclerc (3-4) just inside the left field foul pole with two outs in the eighth.
