TUCSON, Ariz. >> After a loss last month at Nebraska, the Colorado Buffaloes responded with a dominant win on the road.
On Saturday, the Buffaloes followed another loss with a dominant win on the road.
Shedeur Sanders threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead CU (5-2, 3-1 Big 12) to a 31-7 rout of Arizona on Saturday in front of a sold-out crowd at Arizona Stadium.
This is the first time CU has won three games in a row on the road during a season since 1996, and it moved the Buffs within one win of bowl eligibility. This is the first time the Buffs have won at least five games in a season since 2019.
Star cornerback/receiver Travis Hunter played sparingly for the Buffs as he recovers from an injury suffered a week earlier against Kansas State, but Sanders took care of things with an impressive first half to bury the Wildcats (3-4, 1-3), who have lost three in a row.
A recap of the Buffs’ win against the Wildcats
First quarter
Arizona went for a surprise onside kick to start the game, and CU recovered at the Wildcats’ 46-yard line. CU took advantage and scored on a 1-yard Isaiah Augustave touchdown run, marking the first time CU has scored on its opening drive since the opener. The defense then forced Arizona into a three-and-out, and the offense was in business again. This time, a pair of pass interference penalties on the Wildcats proved pivotal. The drive ended with Shedeur Sanders tossing an underhand flip to Drelon Miller for a touchdown. Arizona responded this time, though, with a 10-play, 75-yard drive capped by Noah Fifita connecting with Chris Hunter for a touchdown. Score: Colorado 14, Arizona 7.
Second quarter
On a drive that started late in the first quarter, the Buffs increased the lead with another touchdown, as Shedeur found Will Sheppard for a 16-yard pass. Sheppard caught a 20-yard pass early in the possession to spark the drive. A big sack by CU’s Nikhai Hill-Green on the ensuing Arizona possession forced a long, 52-yard field goal attempt, which missed. Shortly after that, there was a stretch of three turnovers (two by CU, one by Arizona) in six plays, but neither team capitalized. CU righted the ship late in the quarter with a seven-play touchdown drive, capped by Shedeur’s 6-yard run. Score: Colorado 28, Arizona 7.
Third quarter
Arizona got the kickoff to open the third and moved the ball briefly into CU territory, but the Buffs’ defense stuffed the drive and forced a punt. CU then marched downfield and got inside the Arizona 20-yard line. That drive stalled, but the Buffs got a 28-yard field goal from Alejandro Mata. Both teams traded punts before the end of the quarter. Score: Colorado 31, Arizona 7.
Fourth quarter
With the game pretty much in hand, the Buffs didn’t get much done on offense in the fourth quarter. They punted on their first possession. Then on their second, they got to the Arizona 18, but Sanders was intercepted for the second time, this one coming on a tipped pass. The Buffs also punted on their third possession of the quarter. Arizona wasn’t able to do much on offense either, though, as the Buffs once again shut down an opponent after halftime. Colton Hood intercepted Arizona’s Noah Fifita with less than seven minutes left to seal the game. That was followed by a 34-yard field goal from Mata. Final score: Colorado 34, Arizona 7.
