Some of Santa Cruz County’s top high school track and field athletes turned in stellar performances at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational, held Friday and Saturday at Arcadia High.

Aptos senior Logan Brantley took first place in the Open discus throw with the third-best mark in Mariners’ history (169 feet, 6 inches) and placed fourth in the Open shot put (54-2).

Mariners sophomore Sam Hansen took second in the Rising Stars 1 mile race (4 minutes, 14.57 seconds). Hansen’s time was the second-best time in school history behind Jacob Evans, who ran 4:13.43 at the Stanford Invitational as a senior in 2004.

Scotts Valley junior Ava Decleve took fourth in the women’s Open 800 with the second-best time in Falcons’ history (2:12.48), and 45th in the women’s Open 400 (59.27).

Soquel’s Logan Walters competed in his first decathlon and took fifth out of 12 athletes with 5,923 points. His top finishes came in the 100 (11.05, first), pole vault (13-9.25, third), 1,500 (5:05.89, sixth), and long jump (20-2.50, sixth).

Soquel junior Ben Comilang took sixth in the Open triple jump (43-11).Pajaro Valley senior Izaak Ocampo took 14th in the Rising Stars long jump (21-2).

Santa Cruz senior Eli Fitchen Young, competing in a field that included a record five athletes who have previously ran sub-4-minute miles, took 35th in the invitational 3,200 in 9:06.79.

Aptos’ Brady Bliesner took 38th in the Open 800 (1:57.69).

Girls track and field

Bill Kearney Invitational >> Santa Cruz sophomore Joy Roberts took first in both the 100 (12.80) and 200 (26.08) at the 34th Bill Kearney Invitational at Salinas High on Saturday.

San Lorenzo Valley sophomore Skyla Leggett took first in the 400 (1:03.76) and second in the 800 (2:27.83) at the 20-team event.

Scotts Valley junior Dylan Turzak took first in the 800 (2:23.61).

Santa Cruz County earned a sweep in the 1,600. Monte Vista Christian freshman Anna Conca posted a school-record 5:14.58 finish to edge Santa Cruz freshman Isla Roake (5:14.61) for the win, and Pacific Collegiate freshman Iris Paten (5:15.52) took third with the second-best time in school history. All three runners ran personal bests.

Watsonville senior Katelynn Ruiz (11:23.98) held off MVC senior Kylie Brunelli (11:29.53) for the win in the 3,200.

SLV senior Naomi Seastrom took first in the 300 hurdles (46.75) and second in the 100 hurdles (16.93).

SLV senior Orea Pollock took first in the high jump (5-0). She also teamed with Emily Petrov, Naomi Seastrom, and Skyla Leggett for the win in the 4×400 relay (4:23.49).

MVC junior Nylie Joneson took first in the pole vault (7-6).

Santa Cruz freshman Haisley Flanagan took second in the 300 hurdles (50.80).

Santa Cruz (Francesca Garces, Lily Gingery, Joy Hilldale, and Joy Roberts) took second in the 4×100 relay (51.01).

Hilldale also took third in the high jump (4-4).

Alisal Invitational >> Watsonville senior Jocelyn Guzman took first in the 300 hurdles (50.83) at the 13-team Alisal Invitational on Saturday.

Mount Madonna senior Lagi Hunnicutt took second in both the long jump (15-5) and triple jump (30-10).

Watsonville junior Lizbeth Gomez Abrica took second in the 800 (2:33.15), junior teammate Lizbeth Gomez Abrica took second in the 1,600 (5:32.56), and junior teammate Azucena Sandoval took third (5:37.86).

Boys track and field

Bill Kearney Invitational >> Santa Cruz junior Kaden Steel took first in the 300 hurdles (46.79) and second in the 110 hurdles (19.14) at the 34th Bill Kearney Invitational at Salinas High on Saturday.

MVC junior Conor Gilliam took first in the 800 with the second-best time in school history (1:57.60).

Harbor senior Luke Wyland took first in the 400 (50.30), and MVC senior Joshua Tepoorten took second (50.75).

Santa Cruz sophomore Caelan Harris (4:43.72) and freshman teammate Anders Laurberg (4:45.01) finished one-two, respectively, in the 1,600.

MVC junior Owen Bingham took second in the 300 hurdles (48.24) and third in the 110 hurdles (19.69).

Alisal Invitational >> Watsonville senior Nathaniel Aceves-Aguilar and junior teammate Lisandro Pantoja posted top-three finishes in two events at the 13-team Alisal Invitational on Saturday.

Aceves-Aguilar took first in the discus (135-0) and third in the long jump (19-10.5), and Pantoja took first in the shot put (41-6) and third in the discus (125-8).

Watsonville junior Desi Salinas-Holz took third in the 800 (2:09.02), and sophomore teammate Nain Garcia-Ferria took third in the 1,600 (4:43.44).

Men’s volleyball

At Cal Lutheran 3, UC Santa Cruz 2 >> Senior outside hitter/opposite Dylan Foreman had 20 kills and 11 digs, but the No. 18 ranked Banana Slugs saw their 2-1 set lead evaporate in a 25-15, 23-25, 24-26, 25-13, 15-12 loss to the No. 7 Kingsmen in Thousand Oaks on Saturday.

Sophomore middle blocker Kyle Ownbey had 10 kills for UCSC (19-8) in its regular-season finale. Junior outside hitter Riley Norman had nine kills and nine digs, and sophomore setter Andrew Pak had 38 assists and eight digs.

Michael Stahl had 23 kills for the Kingsmen (21-6), the defending NCAA D-III national champion, and Gavin Galanski made 55 assists.

The 2025 DIII men’s volleyball championship kicks off on Monday with the selection show at 7 a.m. streamed live on NCAA.com.

High school softball

Watsonville Tournament >> The Wildcatz went 2-1 at the Watsonville Tournament on Saturday. They suffered an 8-1 loss to Alisal, beat North Salinas 6-3, and routed Greenfield 17-1.

Watsonville (11-6, 1-3) hosts Everett Alvarez (8-8, 1-3) on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

High school baseball

Wilcox 6, at Santa Cruz 5 >> The Cardinals led 5-1 through four innings, but were unable to finish off the Chargers in the teams’ nonleague game Saturday.

Cameron Fusari had two hits, including a double, two RBI, and scored twice for Santa Cruz (8-4, 5-0). Fernando DaCosta had two hits, including a triple, one RBI, and a run scored. Jason Graff had two hits and drew a walk.

Matthew Tiendas doubled, had two RBI, and scored a run for the Chargers (10-7).

Ryan Cabildo gave up one hit over three innings of scoreless relief and earned the win. Cardinals reliever Morgan Toohey was tagged with the loss.

Santa Cruz plays at Harbor (11-3, 3-2) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

College baseball

At Monterey Peninsula 7, Cabrillo 0 >> Oscar Knapp and Jayson Schmeisser each had two hits in the Seahawks’ Coast Conference South Division loss Saturday.

Jaxon Fox hit a three-run home run and finished with four RBI for the Lobos (19-15, 7-8).

Fabio Bundi pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and four walks and earned the win. Anders Page-Roth gave up seven runs, six earned, over 4 2/3 innings and took the loss.

Cabrillo (13-21, 6-9) plays at Hartnell (13-22, 4-11) on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

Boys volleyball

Watsonville Tournament >> Scotts Valley, competing with four varsity starters and three junior-varsity call-ups during spring break, won a set in its loss to Gilroy and also suffered losses to Monte Vista Christian, North Salinas, and Willow Glen on Saturday.

Senior middle blocker Otto Palma totaled 20 kills, five blocks, and 10 digs for the Falcons. Senior outside hitter Raith Wallwork had eight kills, nine aces, and 23 digs. Junior opposite Marlon Meissner had three kills, three aces, and 16 digs, and and junior setter and opposite Will Shanks made 37 assists, six kills, and 15 digs.

Men’s tennis

Emery 6, UCSC 1 >> The Banana Slugs won two of three doubles matches to secure their lone point in Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday.

No. 2 Mayur Nookala and Radin Sadeghi, and No. 3. Arjun Tandon and Praneet Varade both earned 6-3 wins.

UCSC (9-10) faces East Texas Baptist University (10-3) in Atlanta on Sunday at noon.
