BERLIN >> Team World just needs two more match wins to claim the Laver Cup a third straight time.

Team World won three of four matches from Team Europe on Saturday to take an 8-4 points lead into the third and final day in Berlin.

After Friday’s matches were split evenly, Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz beat top-five opponents and Ben Shelton and Alejandro Tabilo crushed Europe’s Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-1, 6-2.

Team Europe’s only win came from Carlos Alcaraz, the French Open and Wimbledon champion. He beat Shelton 6-4, 6-4 with one break in each set. Alcaraz saved all five break points he faced. Shelton conceded his first sets in his fifth career Laver Cup match.

Tiafoe, who reached the U.S. Open semifinals, beat No. 5 Daniil Medvedev 3-6, 6-4 (10-5) for the first time in six attempts.

The Laver Cup is formatted like golf’s Ryder Cup. The first team to 13 points wins. There are four matches on Sunday, each worth three points.

Deadly bus accident claims lives of 3 Brazilian football players >> A bus carrying a Brazilian football team flipped on a road south of Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, killing three people and injuring at least six, authorities said.

Local media reported the three dead were players from the American football team the Coritiba Crocodiles of the southern Brazilian city of Curitiba.

The team was headed Saturday to Rio de Janeiro, where they were set to play in the country’s American football championship. But the game was canceled following the deadly accident. Photos circulating on local news sites and social media show the damaged bus laying on its side in the middle of the road.

Liverpool win, take first in EPL >> Luis Díaz scored two fine goals inside two minutes as Liverpool beat Bournemouth 3-0 to move to the top of the English Premier League.

Arne Slot’s side leads Manchester City on goal difference only and the defending champion needs a draw at home to Arsenal in Sunday’s big game to reclaim first place.

Newcastle misses chance to go top >> Victory would have moved Newcastle to the top of the league but it lost at Fulham 3-1 to drop to sixth spot.

Fulham led early through Raúl Jiménez’s shot into the bottom right corner and a howler by goalie Nick Pope gifted Emile Smith Rowe Fulham’s second in the 22nd.

Double delight for Jackson >> Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson marked his 50th club appearance with two early goals to inspire his team to a 3-0 win at West Ham.

Jackson added an assist for Cole Palmer against a poor West Ham side which was booed at the end of the match by home fans.

Tottenham rallies to beat Brentford >> Tottenham hit back to beat Brentford 3-1 after Bryan Mbuemo scored in the first minute for the visitors.

Dominic Solanke leveled from close range seven minutes later after James Maddison’s shot was saved.

Racing

Norris beats Verstappen for pole position >> Lando Norris edged ahead of his title rival Max Verstappen to start on pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix.

Norris was .203 of a second ahead of Verstappen to start on pole, with Lewis Hamilton third for Mercedes, .316 off Norris’ time.

Verstappen leads Norris in the standings by 59 points.

NFL

Steelers place first round pick on IR >> The Pittsburgh Steelers placed rookie right tackle Troy Fautanu on injured reserve with a knee injury.

The 20th overall pick in the draft practiced most of the week before injuring the knee on Friday, less than 48 hours before the Steelers face the Los Angeles Chargers in a meeting of 2-0 teams.

Raiders’ Koonce out for season >> Las Vegas Raiders pass rusher Malcolm Koonce, who injured a knee shortly before the season opener, will miss the rest of the season, two people close to the situation told The Associated Press.

The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the Raiders have not announced that Koonce will not play this season.

Thitikul expands lead over Ko on LPGA Tour >> Jeeno Thitikul had a rocky closing stretch but did enough to expand her lead over Hall of Famer Lydia Ko, finishing with a birdie for a 4-under 68 and a two-shot advantage in the Kroger Queen City Championship.

Thitikul holed a 20-footer from the fringe for birdie on the par-4 15th hole to reach 5 under for the day and 17 under for the tournament, four shots ahead of Ko, before dropping shots on the next two holes. She closed with a birdie on the par-5 18th at TPC River’s Bend for a 54-hole total of 16-under 200 in hot, dry conditions that caused the golf course to get firmer.

Boxing

Dubois retains IBF heavyweight title >> Daniel Dubois retained the IBF heavyweight title by knocking out former two-time world champion Anthony Joshua in the fifth round in a dominant first defense of his belt.

Joshua had already been floored in the first and third rounds before falling face first after a straight right hand by Dubois. The referee waved off the fight.
