Colorado’s offseason in football is barely beginning and a lot of work is still to be done to build the roster for the 2025 season.
The Buffaloes are well on their way, however, filling some holes and restocking after losing several key players to graduation following a 9-4 campaign and a trip to the Valero Alamo Bowl.
Assuming head coach Deion Sanders remains at CU — rumors about him potentially coaching the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys continue to fly, although he has not interviewed for the job — it’s a good bet he and the Buffs’ staff will be very active in the transfer portal throughout the spring and into the summer.
To this point, though, the Buffs are off to a solid start, with 17 transfer additions. Here’s a look at what the Buffs have done so far in the portal at each position.
QB (1 transfer)
Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter comes in with one season to play. The Conference USA most valuable player in 2023, Salter has a great deal of experience as the Buffs look to replace star Shedeur Sanders. Of course, five-star prep recruit Julian Lewis and returning sophomore Ryan Staub will battle for the job, as well.
RB (0)
This is the only position group that hasn’t had any additions — through the portal or prep ranks — this offseason. All five scholarship backs from last year are slated to return.
WR (1)
Joseph Williams from Tulsa is the only transfer addition, for now, but he’s a good one. He was the freshman of the year in the American Athletic Conference. CU returns four receivers and has signed three highly touted prep recruits but will likely add at least two more.
TE (1)
CU has put more emphasis on this spot this offseason. They’ve signed Zach Atkins, a transfer from Northwest Missouri State, to bring some experience to the table. Currently, five tight ends are on scholarship, with Sam Hart and Sav’ell Smalls slated to return and two high school players signed.
OL (4)
So far, this has been CU’s biggest target area, with four transfer additions. That group includes experienced starters Zarian McGill (Louisiana Tech) and Zy Crisler (Illinois). Aki Ogunbiyi (Texas A&M) and Mana Taimani (Mississippi) are key additions for depth and competition. The Buffs had some struggles up front this past season, but five full-time or part-time starters are set to return, along with three other veterans. CU also signed three prep linemen.
DL (3)
Another key target area, the Buffs have added three veterans in Tavian Coleman (Texas State), Gavriel Lightfoot (Fresno State) and Jehiem Oatis (Alabama). All three are seniors with starting experience, and they’ve played a combined 101 games at the FBS level. As a bonus, CU is expecting to have Taurean Carter (an Arkansas transfer last year) back as a medical redshirt. He missed most of the 2024 season with an injury. Key rotational players Anquin Barnes, Amari McNeill and Tawfiq Thomas are also back, so this spot is in good shape.
Edge (0)
No transfer additions yet, but the Buffs have four-star recruit London Merritt coming in as a freshman. They also are set to return several key players from this past year, including Arden Walker, Samuel Okunlola, Taje McCoy and Keaten Wade.
ILB (3)
Both starting linebackers from this past season — LaVonta Bentley and Nikhai Hill-Green — are gone. The Buffs hope they’ve found their replacements with the additions of Martavius French (UTSA), Reginald Hughes (Jacksonville State) and Kylan Salter (TCU), the younger brother of Kaidon Salter. Hughes was first-team All-Conference USA and French was second-team All-AAC.
DB (2)
Safety Tawfiq Byard (South Florida) and cornerback Makari Vickers (Oklahoma) have joined the herd this offseason. Byard had a breakout year at USF (54 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 2 sacks) and will compete for a starting job with both of last year’s safeties gone. A reserve at Oklahoma, Vickers can play corner or safety. CU also got a boost with this year’s starting nickel, Preston Hodge, announcing he’s taking advantage of an extra year of eligibility. Although CU lost several key players in the secondary, they have good talent coming back.
Specialists (2)
Coach Prime has been frustrated by the lack of touchbacks the past two years, but that shouldn’t be a problem with Louisiana Tech transfer Buck Buchanan, one of the best in the country at putting the ball out of the end zone. At punter, the Buffs had an opening and filled that with Damon Greaves, who has been Kansas’ punter the past two years.
