In Loving Memory

Marlena our cherished Mom, Noni, Ma, Sister, Aunty Mar, passed away on June 20th at the age of 85. She leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love and an unshakable belief in the enduring connection of our souls beyond this life.

Marlene believed heaven was within. Praying faithfully to Saint Anthony and Saint Jude, finding strength and comfort in her spirituality. She believed with all her heart in eternal life, and she reminded us often: love is forever.

Her warm, gentle and patient spirit touched everyone she knew. Her kindness, unwavering support and love — so often shared through her cooking —were some of her many gifts. Always beautiful, simply elegant, and impeccably put together, her true beauty was in her laughter and the way she made others feel seen and loved.

Marlene found great joy in being with people. She treasured her lifelong friends and created lasting memories during their annual weekends in Aptos, trips to the Italian festival, Steve Tyrell concerts, and sharing laughter and heartache that comes with decades of friendship.

Her Walnut Creek friends, Wells Fargo group and her “Campari” in Monterey — held a special place in her heart. You all know who you are.

Above all, Marlene lived for her family. Holidays, birthdays, and special occasions were synonymous with her famous white cake -it simply wasn’t a party without it.

Family gatherings, big or small, were everything to her.

She cooked with love, celebrated with joy, and believed togetherness was sacred. Her food wasn’t just delicious, it was how she kept our traditions alive, and how she made everyone feel cared for.

She embraced life. Whether traveling to Europe with her family and friends or cheering on her grandchildren at their events. She loved the Giants and the Warriors.

One of her happiest moments was when "Happy Birthday Noni" lit up the Giants Jumbotron, her face glowing with surprise and joy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Smario; her parents, Angelina and Horace Ascanio; her sisters, Joyce Cardinale and Gail Pearson; and her brother-in-law, Sal Cardinale.

She is survived by her children: Sandie Smario-Alison (Len), Steve Smario (Jeryn), Ricky Smario (Lisa); her grandchildren: Alex and Kayla Alison, Anthony and Christian Smario. Her sister, Janet Ascanio; her brother-in-law David Pearson; Nieces and nephews: Phil, Amy and Colette Cardinale, Vicky Cardinale and Curtis. Laura, Rachel and Nicole Lanfranchi. John and Monica Mercurio and family.

Marlene loved deeply and was deeply loved in return.

She feels all your thoughts and prayers. We will honor her life with every act of kindness. To respect her wishes, there will be no public funeral services. Please privately celebrate Marlene in your own way or have a mass said in her name.
