DU celebrates 75th anniversary with series win

With about 150 former Pioneers players in attendance, Denver defeated Lindenwood 4-1 Saturday night at Magness Arena for a two-game sweep during the school’s 75th Anniversary Weekend, according to a press release.

Forward Sam Harris scored two goals Saturday, including the game-winner. The sophomore leads the nation in goals with nine. Forwards Rieger Lorenz and Aidan Thompson scored the other two goals for the Pioneers.

Goaltender Matt Davis made 17 saves in the game, which saw the former Pioneers being honored in the first intermission while presenting the school’s 10 national championship trophies.

Top-ranked DU also defeated the Lions 4-1 on Friday night. The 10-0-0 start for the Pios set a program record for straight wins to begin a season.

Harris and Lorenz also scored Friday, along with DU forwards Jared Wright and James Reeder. Davis tallied 23 saves in the win.

Medvedev loses temper and match at ATP Finals

TURIN, Italy>> U.S. Open finalist Taylor Fritz frustrated Daniil Medvedev to the point that the Russian smashed his racket and was docked a point in a 6-4, 6-3 victory for the American in the opening match of the ATP Finals on Sunday.

“I get angry, frustrated. This time completely with myself, not with anyone. Just with myself,” Medvedev said.

Tennis Channel takes analyst off the air

NEW YORK>>Tennis Channel took analyst Jon Wertheim off the air “indefinitely” after Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova called him out on social media for what she called “coverage that focused on my appearance rather than my performance.”

The network said in a statement posted online Sunday that Wertheim made “an inappropriate comment” and it “holds its employees to a standard of respectfulness for others at all times, a standard that was not met in this moment.”

Wertheim posted an apology, acknowledging his “deeply regrettable comments off-air” that “inadvertently made it to live air.”

Krejcikova played last week in the WTA Finals, which were shown on Tennis Channel.

Spirit, Gotham to meet

Trinity Rodman forced an own goal in extra time to help the Washington Spirit come from behind and earn a 2-1 win over Bay FC in the opening round of the National Women’s Soccer League playoffs on Sunday in Washington.

While Rodman was held scoreless in the game, her cross forced the go-ahead goal six minutes into extra time. Bay FC defender Caprice Dydasco saw the ball late and accidentally redirected it into the goal.

Rose Lavelle scored in stoppage time and Gotham FC defeated the Portland Thorns 2-1 on to advance to the semifinals to face the Spirit next weekend.

Florida’s winless weekend

Florida State coach Mike Norvell fired his offensive and defensive coordinators Sunday, one day after a 52-3 loss at then-No. 10 Notre Dame. Norvell dismissed offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller and receivers coach Ron Dugans.

There were nine games involving the state’s FBS and FCS teams over the weekend.

There were no wins for Miami, Florida, Florida State, UCF, South Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida A&M, Bethnune-Cookman or Stetson. Florida International did not play.
