Santa Cruz Little League’s 8/9-year-old All-Stars beat Capitola-Soquel 11-1 to win the unsanctioned District 39 championship at Harvey West Park in Santa Cruz on Monday.

Starting pitcher Carter Gagnier earned the win and Nathaniel Ow secured the save.

Santa Cruz went 3-0 in the tournament and outscored opponents 27-2. It also beat Pajaro Valley 11-1 and Capitola-Soquel 5-0.

“This is a special group of players who played amazing all tournament and thrived with exceptional pitching, strong defense, opportunistic offense, and great team chemistry,” Santa Cruz Manager Lauren Gagnier said.

In addition to Gagnier and Ow, Santa Cruz’s All-Star roster include Jake Ritter, Zachary Ow, Owen Smith, Gavin Fox, Emmit Gagnier, Elijah Fierro, Sawyer Haynes, Dylan Mandella, Quinn Lampel, and Moe Karon.

Ben Ow and Gary Smith are coaches for Santa Cruz.

Beach volleyball

Pro Beach World Tour Futures: The French team of Marilu Pally, a Santa Cruz native who plays beach volleyball for Cal, and Saofé Duval earned bronze at the Pro Beach World Tour’s Futures event in los, Greece, on Sunday.

Pally and Duval, who finished with a 4-1 record, beat Japan’s Sakura Ito and Mayu Sawame 21-16, 21-17 in the third-place match.

In the semifinals on Saturday, Pally and Duval lost 21-17, 21-13 to Ukraine’s Inna Makhno and Iryna Makhno, a team the French team beat 21-13, 21-11 in their second pool-play match Friday.

Pally and Duval also beat Greece’s Eleni Alexoglou and Myrto Paschalaki, 21-11, 21-18 in pool-play action on Friday, and knocked off Lithuania’s Ieva Dumbauskaite and Gerda Grudzinskaite, 21-9, 19-21, 15-13 in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
