Bishop Amat girls soccer coach Steve Jimenez wasn’t thrilled with how the game was officiated or how visiting Marina defended the Lancers’ star striker, junior Mimi Dominguez, who entered Friday’s CIF Southern Section Division 3 semifinal with a school-record 44 goals.
But he also gave Marina credit for capitalizing on its opportunities as it knocked off top-seeded Bishop Amat 2-0 in a game that Marina dominated in the first half while Amat dominated most of the second half but was unable to find a goal.
“It’s not the team that dominates or has the most opportunities, Jimenez said, “it’s the team that puts it in the back of the net, and that’s what Marina did today.”
Marina scored on a free kick in the 35th minute. Riley Crosby sent a long ball toward the back post that Kendall Crosby ran onto and volleyed home with a left foot for a 1-0 lead.
Bishop Amat (23-4-3) had several chances in the first 20 minutes of the second half, with Jasmine Delgado almost finishing in front of the net and Dominguez nearly heading home the tying goal in the 57th minute.
Marina doubled its lead with Isabella Moawad scoring in the 69th minute, and that was enough to send the Vikings (11-5-6) to next week’s championship game.
“We were very unlucky on a couple bounces, some swings and misses,” Jimenez said of Amat’s chances to tie the score early in the second half. “If we put one of those away obviously it’s a different game. We knew if we could get one of those in the first 15 or 20 minutes, we would most likely win the game.”
Jimenez had some choice words for the officials as they left the field. He thought they made a lot of game-changing calls and that Dominguez should have been awarded a few more calls.
“It’s hard when you’re getting pulled, grabbed and yanked,” Jimenez said. “I guess that’s part of the game, but I’m going to keep my comments to myself. It’s hard when adults have that much power to pretty much dictate the outcome of a game. It’s unfortunate, but it’s part of the game.”
Division 4
EL RANCHO 3, CERRITOS 2 >> El Rancho, which had never been past the second round prior to this season, will play for the school’s first championship after beating top-seeded Downey (21-1-2) by overcoming a 2-1 halftime deficit. El Rancho (18-5) will be on the road against Western Christian in next week’s championship game Friday or Saturday.
“It’s an incredible feeling,” El Rancho coach Stephanie Galvan said. “Girls soccer has never been a big deal here. The boys program is great and deserves everything they get, but for us, this is unreal. Our senior class is special and they were the foundation. They were tired of getting knocked out in the second round and left everything on the field.”
Yamille Picon scored in the first minute to give El Rancho a 1-0 lead, but Cerritos answered with two goals for a 2-1 halftime lead.
Gabriela Perez’s free kick from the 18-yard mark tied the score 2-2 and then Pincon, who has a team-high 20 goals, was fouled in the penalty box, earning a PK in the 60th minute. Crystal Moreno took the PK for El Rancho and buried it, and 20 minutes later the celebration was on.
Division 5
CREAN LUTHERAN 1, WALNUT 0 >> The Mustangs’ season ends in the semifinals for a second straight year. Wanut 17-9-2 gave up a first-half penalty kick, which Crean Lutheran (19-3-3) converted.
Division 6
CARTER 2, SCHURR 1 >> The Spartans’ Alyssa Castillo scored in the second minute for a 1-0 lead, but Carter (12-5-4) tied the game 10 minutes later, then went ahead on a penalty kick midway through the first half. Schurr finishes its season at 18-7-4.
