An Erie man faces attempted murder charges after reportedly threatening a woman with a knife and trying to suffocate her during a domestic violence incident in February.

Andrew Arnold Ward, 45, is charged with attempted first-degree murder after deliberation; four counts of child abuse; third-degree assault; felony menacing; criminal mischief of between $5,000 and $20,000; obstruction of a telephone; and a violent crime enhancer.

He is set for a preliminary hearing on March 10 and is being held in custody on a $200,000 bond.

The woman told dispatchers that Ward had guns and knives in his possession and said that her children were in the home in the incident, which happened at 4:25 p.m. Feb. 11. When police arrived, the woman was seen leaving with her four children.

After he was taken into custody, Ward said in an interview with police that he “lost it,” and he probably shouldn’t talk to officers further.

The woman said that during an argument, Ward admitted to destroying all her things, which led her to look in the closet where she discovered “several items such as clothes, shoes and purses cut and destroyed,” according to an affidavit.

Shortly after, Ward reportedly grabbed the woman, pushed her to the ground, put his hands over her face and mouth and kneeled on her chest, according to the affidavit.

When the woman grabbed her phone during the struggle, she said that Ward took it from her and said he would kill her if she called 911. Ward reportedly grabbed a knife, pointed it at her and said he would end her life, according to the affidavit. The woman also told police that Ward locked the bedroom door to prevent her children from entering the room.

Dispatchers heard a child say over the phone, “Dad said if I called the cops, he was going to kill me” and heard another child ask, “Is dad getting arrested.”

The estimated value of the damaged property is $20,000, including clothing from Lululemon and Louis Vuitton handbags, according to the affidavit.
