Bucks guard Damian Lillard likely will be sidelined indefinitely, with the team announcing Tuesday night that he has deep vein thrombosis in his right calf and is taking blood-thinning medication. The Bucks provided the update on the seven-time All-NBA guard’s status without offering a target date for his potential return. Lillard has missed the last three games for the Bucks, who closed a five-game trip Wednesday against the Nuggets. Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel. “Damian’s health is our No. 1 priority,” Bucks GM Jon Horst said in a statement. “We will support him as he moves through this weekly process of strict criteria to ensure that it is safe for him to return to play. Doctors have indicated that his situation is very unlikely to occur again.” The Bucks said Lillard’s medication has stabilized the thrombosis. Lillard, 34, is the second high-profile player to be sidelined this season because of DVT. Victor Wembanyama of the Spurs was diagnosed with it in his shoulder last month and was ruled out for the season.
Wilson joining Giants on 1-year deal
Russell Wilson has agreed on a one-year contract with the Giants, according to reports Tuesday night. Wilson’s deal is worth up to $21 million with $10.5 million guaranteed. The Giants signed veteran Jameis Winston to a two-year contract last week and have the third pick in the draft. They went 3-14 in 2024 and released 2019 first-round pick Daniel Jones during the season. Before signing Winston and Wilson, Tommy DeVito was the only QB on the team’s roster. The Giants have missed the playoffs in 11 of the last 13 seasons since Eli Manning won his second Super Bowl following the 2011 season. GM Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll are under pressure to win right away while potentially developing a rookie QB. Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, the son of Hall of Fame cornerback and Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders, is a possibility for the Giants with the No. 3 overall pick. With Wilson and Winston ahead of him, Sanders could be eased into a starting role for 2026 if the Giants select him. The 36-year-old Wilson, a 10-time Pro Bowl selection and Super Bowl winner, joins his fourth team in five years.
Swiatek gets extra security at Miami
Iga Swiatek was given extra security protection at the Miami Open after being verbally attacked during a practice session by a man who had sent the five-time Grand Slam champ harassing messages via social media, BBC Sport reported Wednesday. The episode comes a little more than a month after a stalker was removed from a match being played by 2021 U.S. Open champ Emma Raducanu. The No. 2-seeded Swiatek fell to Alexandra Eala 6-2, 7-5 on Wednesday. “Player safety is our top priority,” the WTA said in a statement. “The WTA works closely with tournaments and their security teams on best practices to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.” At the Dubai Championships last month, Raducanu said she could barely breathe, and her eyes filled with tears when a stalker who had approached her earlier in the tournament was in the stands during her match. Raducanu spoke to the umpire, and the man was ejected from the court and later detained by police. In 2022, an obsessive fan was given a restraining order after going to Raducanu’s home three times. —AP
