Two people were injured and a dozen apartments left uninhabitable following an early morning fire Wednesday at a three-story apartment building, the second residential fire in Elgin in less than a week.
Firefighters arrived at the River’s Landing complex at 3 Times Square Road, near the Clock Tower Plaza and the Fox River Trail, shortly after 6:30 a.m. to find flames coming from below a first-floor patio door and spreading to a unit above it, an Elgin Fire Department news release said.
Six residents had to be evacuated by ladder and two people were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, the release said.
Fire or smoke damage was reported in 12 of the building’s 48 units, resulting in those apartments being deemed uninhabitable. Housing assistance for the displaced families was provided by the Kane County Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross, the release said.
While the cause of the fire is under investigation, preliminary findings indicate it was accidental. Damage to the building and contents is estimated at more than $1 million, the release said.
It was not disclosed whether the building had working smoke detectors, but Fire Chief Robert Cagann urged residents in the release to make sure home smoke alarms are working and escape plans made in case of an emergency.
It was the second fire handled by the Elgin Fire Department in the last five days. The first was reported about 9:05 a.m. May 9 at a townhouse in the 1700 block of Pebble Beach Circle, leaving a family displaced and their pet dog deceased, a fire report said.
Heavy black smoke in the kitchen at the rear of the unoccupied residence was discovered by firefighters upon arrival. The dog was found unconscious, and unable to be saved despite resuscitation efforts, the release said.
Damage was estimated damage to be about $150,000. Temporary housing assistance for the residents was provided by Hanover Township Emergency Services.
The fire’s cause remains under investigation, the release said.
