WATSONVILLE >> Around next year, the upgraded Ramsay Park will open to the public and continue to be a place for families to play and make memories just as it has for 51 years.

Construction is ongoing at Watsonville’s largest park following a groundbreaking ceremony in May for the first significant remodel of the park in more than 30 years.

The $33 million Ramsay Park Renaissance Project seeks to bring a variety of new features to the aging Main Street park, including a new multiuse field to accommodate soccer and softball, a renovation of Sotomayor Field with hillside spectator seating, a dog park for both large and small pooches, a new Nature Center with a picnic area, an accessible trail and concrete amphitheater.

One of the largest projects is an all-inclusive playground, and the city announced Oct. 25 that it is submitting a request to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for a Community Block Development Grant to the tune of $256,257 to fund the playground.

Those who wish to make their thoughts on the playground project known can submit a public comment starting Saturday and running through Dec. 10.

The playground is geared toward kids of all abilities between the ages of 5 and 12 and will be located on the hilltop area of the park.

It will be divided into multiple zones and feature a slide area, swing area, spinning features, musical and sensory areas and picnic areas.

The city completed an environmental assessment for the project which ultimately found that it would not have a significant impact on the quality of the human environment. The assessment can be viewed at the city’s website under the “Public Notices” tab at Watsonville.gov/1563/Ramsay-Park. The document is also available in hard copy form at City Hall and can be examined or copied between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. Comments received during the public comment period will be considered by the city before authorizing the submission of a request for release of funds. Comments should be mailed to the following address:

City of Watsonville 1301 Main Street, Watsonville, CA 95076

Comments should specify which notice the writer is responding to and will be accepted through 5 p.m. Dec. 10. For more information, call 831-768-3240.
