The Woodland Camera Forum will present a free photography program on Black and White photography, digital darkroom processing, by local photographer David Nasater. The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 16, at the community room at Living Hope Church, located at 240 N. Walnut, between Woodland Avenue and Kentucky Avenue.
“Back in the 1990s I took a Black and White workshop at the Davis Art Center (when they even had a darkroom!) and fell in love with the medium. Since then, I’ve created B&W images both in film and in digital,” Nasater explains. “In this program, I will present a sampling of my B&W images over the years, offer some observations about the medium, and if time, will demonstrate some tips and techniques I use in Lightroom and Photoshop to process the images.”
Like many photographers, Nasater began taking snapshots at a young age during family vacations. It was when he saw the results from taking a photo at a Kodak Photo Spot at Disneyland that he realized that there was more to the process than just pointing and shooting. Primarily self-taught, he has also taken courses and workshops on alternative landscape photography and creating meaningful images, which have expanded his view of what photography can be.
Nasater primarily works in black and white, capturing images of the landscape and the objects within.
“I photograph what interests me, excites me, and expresses my view of the world. To find meaning in the ordinary that others may not see. And to use my photography to explore myself, my feelings, and my values while telling stories beyond the actual subjects in the frame,” he said. “Even though my process is personal, my goal is to create an image that will engage the viewer and let them find their meaning in my work. To quote James Joyce — ‘In the particular is contained the universal.’”
Nasater has predominately exhibited in Northern California and his works are in several private collections in the area. Nasater has won several awards for his works, including Best of Show at the 30th Annual Vacaville Juried Art Show and the Juror’s Award at the 2018 California State Fair.
In addition to Nasater’s program, members of the camera club will show some of their recent images for discussion. The Woodland Camera Forum is open to all visitors. For more information, contact Susan Bovey at (530) 219-0955 or susan_bovey@yahoo.com.
