UConn guard Azzi Fudd will miss the remainder of the season with a noncontact knee injury she sustained last week during practice, the school announced Wednesday.

Fudd tore the medial meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee, the school said. The injury happened when she came down after a jump shot on Nov. 14 in practice, coach Geno Auriemma said last week.

The junior, who has had an injury-filled career, averaged 11 points in the two games she played this season for the No. 6 Huskies (3-1), a win over Dayton and a loss to No. 10 North Carolina State.

The school said Fudd will have surgery at UConn Health at a “later date.”

“We’re all just so upset for Azzi,” Auriemma said in a statement. “She worked hard to be healthy for this season, and it’s unfortunate when you put in a lot of hard work and have a setback like this.”

Fudd, a former national high school player of the year, also tore the ACL and MCL in her right knee while in high school. She missed 10 games with a foot injury during her freshman season and 22 games because of knee injuries during her sophomore campaign.

Fudd’s injury comes after the return of another UConn star, Paige Bueckers, who missed all of last season and 19 games during her sophomore campaign with knee injuries.

Utah Tech coach out 2 games for behavior

Utah Tech has suspended women’s basketball coach JD Gustin for two games following an investigation into allegations of misconduct by players.

A private investigator hired by parents of Utah Tech players submitted a report to the university in May alleging that Gustin bullied, physically intimidated and retaliated against players dating back to 2018, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. Players also spoke with the Tribune about their allegations and said the athletic department had ignored their complaints.

Utah Tech hired a consulting firm that does workplace investigations to review the complaints.

Gustin will remain as head coach.

D-backs acquire Suárez from Mariners

The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired slugger Eugenio Suárez from the Seattle Mariners for reliever Carlos Vargas and catcher Seby Zavala.

The 32-year-old Suárez was a 2018 All-Star for the Cincinnati Reds and has been a consistent power hitter for the past decade, slugging 246 homers since 2012. He fills a need for the D-backs at third base, which was manned mostly by Evan Longoria and Emmanuel Rivera last season.

Suárez also provides another power bat for the reigning NL champions. He hit .232 with 22 homers and 96 RBIs for the Mariners last season, playing third base and designated hitter.

Suárez is due $11 million for next year as part of deal that includes a $15 million option for 2025 with a $2 million buyout.

Tiger Woods and son to play in PNC again

Tiger Woods is returning to the PNC Championship, the 36-hole event that has become one of his favorites because of his partner: His son.

Woods and 14-year-old Charlie are playing the PNC Championship for the fourth straight year, the one tournament he has not missed during the last injury-plagued four years.

“It is an amazing gift to be able to share my love of golf with Charlie and we genuinely do look forward to playing in the PNC Championship all years,” Woods said Wednesday. “Competing together, against a field of so many golfing greats and their families, is so special.”

The PNC Championship is Dec. 16-17 at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Orlando at Grande Lakes.

Woods and son were runner-up in 2021, just 10 months after Woods badly damaged his right leg and ankle in a car crash in Los Angeles. They finished seventh in their 2020 debut and tied for eighth last year.

LIV plans Super Bowl week Vegas stop

LIV Golf released a 2024 schedule that includes going to Las Vegas the same weekend as the Super Bowl and has three U.S. events that will he held the same week as the PGA Tour’s signature $20 million stops.

The Saudi-funded league announced 12 sites on its 14-tournament schedule, leaving out the final regular event that determines the individual title and the team championship, which last year was held at Trump Doral outside Miami.

None of the Trump courses are currently listed on the schedule. LIV previously has gone to Trump Bedminster in New Jersey each of the last two years, and to Trump National outside Washington, D.C., last year.

Olympic organizers will release 400,000 extra tickets for next year’s Paris Games and the Paralympics at the end of the month.

Organizers said Wednesday the sale will start on Nov. 30 at 10 a.m. on the official ticketing website, with seats available for all sports except surfing, in all price categories. Tickets will be sold on a first come-first serve basis, without a lottery.

Organizers said they have already sold 7.2 million tickets out of 10 million available for the Olympics, with further tickets to be released next year.

Refugee athlete provisionally suspended

A refugee athlete on an IOC scholarship to train for the Paris Olympics has been provisionally suspended in a doping case, the Athletics Integrity Unit said.

Fouad Idbafdil was sent a notice of allegation, the AIU said, after testing positive for the banned blood-boosting hormone EPO in October.

The 35-year-old runner is provisionally banned from competing while the case is prosecuted just eight months ahead of the 2024 Summer Games in France, where he now lives.

The International Olympic Committee said last December Idbafdil was among more than 50 refugee athletes getting financial help in their host countries to prepare for Paris.
