A former police sergeant in Superior, Wisconsin, was sentenced Wednesday in Douglas County Circuit Court to five years in prison for the deaths of a man and infant in a crash two years ago.

Gregory Swanson, 44, pleaded guilty April 23 to two counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle. Ten additional counts — six felonies and four misdemeanors — were dismissed but read in for sentencing.

Circuit Court Judge George Glonek sentenced Swanson to five years of initial confinement and five years of extended supervision for each count, with the sentences to run concurrently. The judge said justice can never truly be served in cases like this.

“Regardless of the sentence imposed, it will not bring back the two lives tragically lost nor will it ever return the defendant to the life he also once had before this horrific incident,” Glonek said.

Swanson, who served with the Superior Police Department for 15 years until his resignation following the crash, spoke prior to sentencing.

“I’ve always wanted to help people and do good, and to be responsible for causing so much harm with one stupid decision will haunt me for the rest of my life,” he said.

The sentencing comes two years after the crash on the outskirts of the city of Superior.

A vehicle driven by Swanson struck a disabled vehicle being pushed by Michael Evans, 23, at about 1:17 a.m. on July 15, 2022. Evans was killed instantly, according to court records. Four days later, a 2-month-old who had been in the car, Elijah Ojanen, died from injuries sustained in the crash.

A blood draw taken following the incident indicated Swanson had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.19, twice the legal limit. The airbag control module in his vehicle indicated he was traveling at 58 miles per hour two seconds before the crash, which took place in a 35 mph speed zone.
