A major ice storm is developing in a broad swath of the nation’s midsection from northern Texas, moving northeast to Illinois and Indiana. Freezing rain will spread north Friday, reaching south and central Illinois, but is not expected to reach as far north as Chicago. Light snow is possible late Friday night and Saturday morning at the extreme north edge of the freezing rain area south of the city.
The precipitation shifts north Sunday and arrives in the city as a mixture of sleet and freezing rain late Sunday night. Mixed precipitation changes to rain Monday morning as temperatures climb into the 30s and then into the 40s Monday night. Rain gradually ends Tuesday but the air mass behind the weather system is only slightly colder. Afternoon temperatures Wednesday and Thursday will be in the 40s.
