Adam Lowry and Mason Appleton scored a pair of quick third-period goals to help the host Winnipeg Jets defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3 Sunday to remain the only unbeaten NHL team.

The victory extended Winnipeg’s franchise-record, season-opening win streak to five games.

Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, Vladislav Namestnikov and Nino Niederreiter, into an empty net, also scored for Winnipeg (5-0-0).

Appleton had an assist along with his goal. Nikolaj Ehlers, Colin Miller and Josh Morrissey each contributed two assists.

Pittsburgh (3-4-0) led 2-0 in the second period with goals from Lars Eller and one from Kevin Hayes. Eller scored a second goal to tie the game at 3 early in the third period before Winnipeg scored three in a row to secure the win.

Both teams had backup goaltenders making their first starts of the season.

Eric Comrie made 38 saves for Winnipeg, while Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 31 shots for Pittsburgh.

AVALANCHE 4, SHARKS 1: Ross Colton scored twice, Justus Annunen made 25 saves in his first start of the season and visiting Colorado defeated winless San Jose, which is now 0-4-2.

Cale Makar had an empty-net goal and two assists, and Joel Kiviranta also scored for Colorado.

William Eklund scored for San Jose.

Colton has five goals in his last three games, also scoring twice Friday night in against the Ducks in Anaheim in Colorado’s first victory of the season. He gave Colorado a 2-0 lead in the first period, connecting on a power play at 6:23 and at even strength with 3:23 left.

Makar has 10 assists through six games, and has points in each one.

Colton, bumped up to the top line with Jonathan Drouin injured, is tied for second in the NHL in goals with six. Playing alongside world-class forwards in Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen has certainly helped.

“Those are two of the best players in the world,” Colton said. “I’m just trying to play my game, get open for them. Just find the smallest areas, and they find you on the ice. It’s been fun.”

In Drouin’s absence, Colton has stepped up both on the top line and power play unit. Three of Colton’s goals this season have come on the power play, and Rantanen said it’s been fun to play with Colton.

“He plays hard, plays with the edge,” Rantanen said. “On the power play, he’s good with loose pucks, good at finishing plays, like we’ve seen this year.”

Eklund cut it to 2-1 late in the first. Joel Kiviranta gave Colorado a 3-1 lead midway through the third, and Makar added the empty-netter.

Vitek Vanecek stopped 18 shots for San Jose, who next play Tuesday against the host Ducks.
