LA PUENTE — Bishop Amat has been chasing the tradition-rich Cathedral boys soccer program for more than a decade, so for a team that suffered so many heartbreaking losses to the Phantoms, payback never felt so good.
Bishop Amat rallied from a 2-0 deficit to pull out a 3-2 victory on Noah Guillen’s go-ahead goal in the 75th minute, completing a season sweep of the Phantoms and winning the Del Rey League title.
It is the Lancers’ first league crown since 2008.
Bishop Amat (22-2-1, 7-0) is having its best season ever, and will wrap up league play today against last-place La Salle before preparing for either the CIF Southern Section Open or Division 1 playoffs. Amat is No. 10 in this week’s CIF-SS computer rankings, with the top eight teams likely headed to the Open Division of the playoffs.
But Friday night, nobody seemed to care.
“My hat’s off to Cathedral, they have a great tradition,” Bishop Amat coach Steve Jimenez said. “These boys, it’s been six years in the making. I couldn’t be prouder of what these boys have done, and we’re not done yet.” After trailing 2-1 at half, Amat kept coming close to scoring, hitting the crossbar and forcing Phantoms goalkeeper Nicholas Acuna to make save after save.
Finally, Eduardo Moreno scored his second goal on a long throw from Michael Luna, heading it home to tie the score 2-2 in the 67th minute.
Moreno nearly scored the go-ahead goal, too. His header from a long free kick was tip-saved by Acuna and rolled straight to Guillen, who banged home a right-place, right-time finish for the eventual game winner with five minutes to play.
“You visualize it when you’re a kid and it’s just a dream to finish in the (late) minutes of the game,” Guillen said. “This is what you imagine. The atmosphere, the league title, we’re champions. It’s the perfect feeling.”
Early on, it looked like Cathedral (9-4-2, 5-2) was on its way to victory.
The Phantoms’ Jayden Rios slammed home a free kick cross in the sixth minute from Sebastian Tinico, taking the ball out of the air with a clean right-footed blast that left no doubt.
Before Amat could settle in and react, the Phantoms doubled their lead on Jonathan Villamontes’ finish in the seventh minute, staking them to a 2-0 cushion.
But it didn’t take long for the Lancers to get back in it, and it came on one of Luna’s dangerous throws-ins to the penalty area.
Luna’s throw stretched across the goal area for Moreno, who leaped above a crowd of players to tuck a header inside the back post in the 15th minute to cut the Phantoms’ lead to 2-1.
The score remained that way the rest of the half.
Luna’s throw-ins are lethal and so are Moreno’s finishes, and they were the combination that got Amat back in the game.
“We started off defending set pieces really bad and we just needed to stay in the game and that’s what we did,” Moreno said of scoring the first of two goals to cut the Phantoms’ lead in half. “It feels great. I told my teammates all year this was going to be our year, and this is our first league championship since (2008). It feels good, lot of passion, lot of heart.”
Jimenez talked about Luna’s throw-ins near the penalty area.
“We understand what our weapons are and what we’re good at,” Jimenez said. “The boys, they literally take it personal to be able to win every single ball in the air, especially on those throw ins, which look like corner kicks.”
After the celebration settled down, Jimenez turned his attention to their next goal — the playoffs.
“I’ve said from day one we want to be able to compete at the highest level, whether that’s the Open Division or Division 1, the boys are ready,” Jimenez said. “We’re excited to make the noise and make a nice little deep run in the playoffs.”
