PITTSBURGH >> Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson will “probably” be active for the first time this season on Sunday in Las Vegas, head coach Mike Tomlin said Friday.

Wilson practiced fully all week and is nearing a return from a calf injury that’s forced him to sit out Pittsburgh’s first five games.

“I thought he had a good week,” Tomlin said. “He has proven his health, and now it’s just a matter of knocking the rust off.”

Justin Fields will make a sixth straight start for the Steelers (3-2), though Wilson could be the backup after spending the first five games as the emergency quarterback behind Fields and Kyle Allen.

“I like what I’ve seen out here, but again, health and rust are two different things,” Tomiln said. “I thought he had a good week displaying his health, his ability to protect himself, and now it’s just the process of getting reacclimated to the ball.”

Wilson, a nine-time Pro Bowler signed to a one-year deal in March, said Thursday he believed he would be ready to play and help the Steelers in whatever capacity Tomlin saw fit.

concussion protocol was followed with QB Josh Allen >> The NFL and its players association said Friday the required steps were followed when Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was evaluated for a concussion last week at Houston and cleared to return to the game.

The league and the NFL Players Association said in a joint statement they reviewed reports from the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant and booth spotters and “those reports confirm that the steps required by the league’s concussion protocol were followed.” The statement added that the protocol was “jointly” put in place by the league and the association.

Allen left the game with roughly six minutes to play after his helmet slammed to the turf following an incomplete pass. He went into the medical tent for observation and returned in time for Buffalo’s next series. Allen’s final five passes fell incomplete.

Raiders place Mayer on non-football illness list >> Las Vegas Raiders tight end Michael Mayer, who has missed the past two games because of personal reasons, was placed on the non-football illness list Friday.

That means Mayer must sit out at least the next four games, beginning Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Also, wide receiver Davante Adams — subject of numerous trade rumors — will miss his third game in a row because of a hamstring injury.

Packers’ Doubs says he needs to communicate better >> Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs didn’t go into specifics Friday about his absence from two practices last week and a subsequent one-game suspension, but he acknowledged he needed to communicate better.

“I absolutely wish I would’ve handled things differently,” Doubs said while speaking to reporters for the first time since returning to practice this week.

Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur said Doubs is expected to play Sunday when the Packers (3-2) host the Arizona Cardinals (2-3).

Doubs didn’t attend the Packers’ practices on Oct. 3 and Oct. 4. The Packers announced Oct. 5 that Doubs would be serving a one-game suspension for what they described as conduct detrimental to the team. The Packers defeated the Los Angeles Rams 24-19 without Doubs the next day.

49ers Pearsall will return to practice>> San Francisco 49ers rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall is set to return to practice next week for the first time since he was shot in the chest in a robbery attempt nine days before the season opener.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that the Niners will open the practice window for Pearsall on Monday, when the team begins preparations for a Super Bowl rematch against Kansas City.

Pearsall can practice for three weeks before the 49ers would have to activate him from the non-football injury list. Shanahan had no timeline for when Pearsall will be ready to play in games.
