WATSONVILLE >> San Lorenzo Valley High’s wrestling team produced three finalists and two champions at the Apple Cider Classic at Watsonville High on Saturday.
Cougars senior Grady Cloyd (190 pounds) and sophomore Gabriel Atatta (285) won titles in their respective weight class, and junior teammate Ollin Bates (215) took second after suffering the narrowest of losses.
SLV brought just four wrestlers to the competition and placed ninth out of 36 teams with 93.5 points. All three of the Cougars’ finalists are defending Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League individual champions.
“Great showing,” Cougars coach Ken Pollastrini said.
Los Gatos (259.0) won the team title. Hollister (223.5) placed second, and Gilroy (179.0), winner of 21 straight Central Coast Section titles, sent its ‘B’ team and took third.
Cloyd (21-3 overall) won by a technical fall, a win of 15 or more points, in his first match and pinned his final three opponents, including Gilroy sophomore Mousa Abughazaleh in the final.
“Complete domination,” Pollastrini said of Cloyd. “He shined on his feet, his takedowns were great, and he rode really well. I don’t remember him being on his back once.”
Cloyd spent a lot of his offseason training at Sunnyvale Wrestling Club and running hills on his family’s property in Ben Lomond, basically, “being relentless.”
“My shots, my takedowns, have improved drastically,” said Cloyd, a two-time SCCAL champ.
Despite his numerous wins by pin, Cloyd enjoys when he earns a tech fall. It’s much more difficult than catching an opponent in an awkward position and sending him to his back for a pin.
“It’s a show of dominance,” he said. “There’s no question.”
It’s his second tournament win this season. He also placed first at the Peninsula Invitational at Half Moon Bay, fourth at the Pat Lovell Holiday Classic at Aptos, and sixth at the Webber Lawson Memorial at Fremont, after he DQ’d with an oblique strain.
Atatta (15-6) was unseeded and won three of his four matches by fall, including No. 1 seed Julian Manso in the first round and No. 2 Jorge Villagomez in the final.
“He also wrestled really well, so did Ollin,” Pollastrini said. “Gabe wrestled kids 70 and 80 pounds heavier. He’s 205. He wrestled really smart. He’s very strong. Since he’s smaller than his opponents, he used his brain, muscles, and speed to beat these guys.”
Atatta has trained with Sunnyvale Wrestling Club and Santa Cruz Wrestlers Union, but he was busy with other obligations in the offseason. He was a member of Santa Cruz State Junior Lifeguards over the summer. And in the fall he played two sports, football and water polo, for the Cougars.
“This is my first first at a varsity tournament, so it’s pretty special,” Atatta said. “I’m only a sophomore, so I can still improve.”
Bates (16-8) lost by a 6-3 sudden-victory to Alisal junior Fabian Martinez in the final. Martinez pinned his other four opponents. Bates reached the final with three first-period pins.
Soquel’s Abran Zubiate (157) and St. Francis’ Johnny Croghan (165) took third, and Harbor’s Nico Aquino (165) and Pajaro Valley’s Brian Flores (215) took fourth.
Soquel’s Nathaniel Marcus (106) and Jackson Stevens (215), and Scotts Valley’s Coleton LaFontaine (175) took fifth, and Pajaro Valley’s Jose Perez (190) and Soquel’s Javier Pinedo-Gonzalez (285) took sixth.
Gilroy, Los Gatos, and Hollister each produced champions in two weight divisions. Eli Mendoza (106) and Mateo Sanchez (120) took first for the Mustangs, Michael Terrell (132) and Lucas Pannell (157) were crowned as champions for the Wildcats, and Aaron Rodriguez (138) and Stephen Seymour (150) won titles for the Haybalers.
Other division winners included: Monterey’s Gabriel Dela Rosa (113), Overfelt’s Diego Escobar (126), Everett Alvarez’s Joseph Albert (144), Live Oaks’ Robert Rael (165), and North Salinas’ Jason Valencia (175) .
Eight other schools from Santa Cruz County competed in the event. Soquel (82.5) took 12th, Aptos (57.0) was 18th, Pajaro Valley (35.5) was 24th, St. Francis (32.5) was 26th, Scotts Valley (27.0) was 28th, Harbor (24.0) was 31st, Watsonville (11.0) was 34th, and Santa Cruz (5.0) was 36th.
